What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Associate Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Associate Structural Engineer, you need a solid understanding of structural analysis, design principles, and engineering mathematics, typically supported by a bachelor's degree in civil or structural engineering and EIT/FE certification. Proficiency with industry-standard software such as AutoCAD, Revit, ETABS, or SAP2000 is essential for modeling and analyzing structures. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set standout candidates apart. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient, and compliant design of structures while facilitating successful project collaboration.

What are some common challenges faced by Associate Structural Engineers when transitioning from design to construction phases?

Associate Structural Engineers often encounter challenges when their design concepts are implemented on-site, such as unanticipated site conditions or discrepancies between plans and actual construction. Effective communication with contractors and adaptability are crucial to resolving these issues promptly. Collaborating closely with senior engineers and construction teams helps ensure that design intent is maintained while accommodating necessary field adjustments, making teamwork and problem-solving essential skills in this phase.

What are Associate Structural Engineers?

Associate Structural Engineers are early to mid-career professionals who assist in designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of structures such as buildings, bridges, and other infrastructure. They work under the supervision of senior engineers to ensure projects meet safety standards, building codes, and client specifications. Their responsibilities often include creating structural drawings, performing calculations, conducting site visits, and coordinating with architects and contractors. This role serves as a key step toward becoming a licensed structural engineer and taking on more advanced project leadership.

What is the highest paying job in structural engineering?

The highest paying roles in structural engineering typically include senior-level positions such as Principal Structural Engineer or Engineering Manager, which often require extensive experience, advanced certifications, and leadership skills. These roles can offer salaries exceeding $150,000 annually, especially in large firms or specialized industries like aerospace or infrastructure projects.

Job description

FSB is a full-service Architecture and Engineering firm built on nearly 80 years of design excellence, technical innovation, and community impact. Weโ€™re always on the lookout for engineers who see beyond the expected โ€” professionals who understand how thoughtful design can transform lives and elevate everyday experiences.

Weโ€™re growing and currently seeking Structural Engineers at the mid- and senior-levels to join our collaborative engineering team. Whether youโ€™re building on several years of post-licensure experience or bringing deep expertise to lead complex projects, FSB offers the opportunity to work across a wide spectrum of projects that matter.

What sets us apart is our deep commitment to cross-discipline collaboration. At FSB, engineers work shoulder to shoulder with architects, interior designers, and technical experts to shape solutions that are both innovative and buildable.

If youโ€™re passionate about engineering that serves people and community โ€” and youโ€™re ready to grow with a team that values both purpose and performance โ€” we invite you to apply.

Responsibilities
  • Design and analyze structural systems including steel, concrete, masonry, and wood for aviation, education, civic, tribal, commercial, and federal facilities.
  • Develop calculations, drawings, specifications, reports, and construction documents that align with project goals.
  • Perform load calculations, seismic and wind analysis, and material-specific design.
  • Apply building codes, IBC, ASCE 7, AISC, and ACI standards to ensure functional, compliant solutions.
  • Participate in client meetings, design reviews, and team coordination efforts.
  • Collaborate with architects, engineers, consultants, and internal teams to deliver integrated outcomes.
  • Support QA/QC efforts and construction administration activities, including submittal reviews, RFIs, and site visits.
  • Lead structural scopes, oversee deliverables, and mentor junior staff (mid- and senior-level roles).
Soft Skills
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills across disciplines and with clients.
  • Critical thinking and creativity in solving complex design challenges.
  • Time management and adaptability in a fast-paced, multi-project environment.
  • Mentorship mindset, with a willingness to guide and support junior team members.
  • Clear, professional writing and verbal communication skills.
  • Initiative in identifying solutions and improving workflow efficiencies.
Qualifications
  • Mid-Level: Bachelorโ€™s or Master's degree in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering, FE exam passed and actively pursuing PE licensure, 5+ years of progressive experience, demonstrated ability to lead design efforts and coordinate small to mid-scale projects
  • Senior Engineer: Bachelorโ€™s or Master's degree in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering, active PE license, 10+ years of progressive experience leading structural design for large-scale or complex projects.
  • Proficiency in Revit; knowledge of structural analysis software such as RISA-3D, RISA Floor, RISA Foundation, or Adapt is a plus.
  • Strong understanding of building systems, documentation standards, and interdisciplinary coordination.
  • Experience in sectors such as aviation, civic, commercial, tribal, mission critical, or federal work is highly valued.

At FSB Architects + Engineers, we believe great design comes from great teams. Whether youโ€™re an engineer building your leadership skills or a seasoned professional shaping major projects, we welcome your expertise and passion.

Join our inclusive community of architects, engineers, and creatives โ€” and help us shape environments that serve people, inspire progress, and stand the test of time.
