What does a Senior Structural Engineer do?

A Senior Structural Engineer is responsible for designing, analyzing, and overseeing the construction of buildings, bridges, and other structures to ensure they are safe, stable, and comply with relevant codes. They lead project teams, review calculations and drawings, and provide technical guidance to junior engineers. Additionally, they collaborate with architects, contractors, and clients to deliver projects on time and within budget, while also addressing any structural issues that may arise during construction.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Structural Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Structural Engineer, you need an accredited engineering degree, professional licensure (such as PE or Chartered Engineer), and deep expertise in structural analysis and design. Familiarity with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, SAP2000, or ETABS, as well as knowledge of relevant building codes, is essential. Job description

Our Opportunity

GPJ is hiring a CAD Engineer to join our growing team.

This role is on-site, requiring you to report to our Las Vegas office location a minimum of 5 days per week.

Your Role

As an Engineer at GPJ, you're tasked with producing Detailed Models, Construction Drawings, Floorplans, Installation Documents, and various other deliverables using CAD applications such as Autodesk AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor. You work closely with Fabrication Project Managers, Structural Engineers, Creative teams, Client Account teams, and Fabrication Shop personnel to process scopes of work and design intent through iterative stages of development and feedback cycles. Your position serves as a crucial bridge between conceptual design and the final product, ensuring that what is fabricated meets the requirements of the project.

Your role is to provide service and quality outputs to project stakeholders and uphold the Engineering Department's mission of delivering the best experience for customers with safety, stability, and sufficiency. You also play a key part in developing space plans that dictate how display elements will be arranged at different events. By collaborating closely with the team, you address any issues that arise to finalize the drawings for approval, which often involves translating rough sketches from team members or structural engineers into detailed drawings. Additionally, you coordinate your efforts with the CNC department to streamline drawing processes and minimize redundancy.

Your Skills

  • Work from sketches and/or input from the various project team members.
  • Strong skills in 2D and 3D AutoCAD.ย
  • Ability to comprehend how things go together and to visualize in 3D.
  • Work well with others since drawings require input and approval from various departments and shop personnel in order to complete the final approved drawings used for fabrication. Being a "team player" is a must.
  • Produce expected drawings quickly, efficiently and as error-free as possible. Drawings should be thoroughly checked by the Senior Engineer or Engineering Manager before submission for any type of approval.ย
  • Aggressively seek resolution from either the department head or other team members to prevent delays in the release of drawings.ย
  • Creatively solve problems - displays often push the envelope and require solutions to problems which have no precedent.ย
  • Calmly deal with numerous changes or "red-lines" to drawings

Your Competencies

Urgency - Decisive, responsive, and fast acting you achieve goals quickly both when working on your own and in collaboration with others. You demonstrate adaptability and agility when making on-the-spot decisions never sacrificing quality or work interactions. Cool under pressure. For the sake of time, you are able to eliminate unnecessary steps and use network resources to aid in project completion.

Attention to Communication - Able to relate ideas to others in many forms (email, phone, in person) and ensure that all who need to be informed are kept in the loop, making sure no detail is left out. Provide ideas, options, and collaborate with the cross-functional team members.

Thoroughness - Ensure your work (and if applicable, the work of others) is complete and accurate. You can spot when details were overlooked, and take the initiative to complete the project, following up to ensure agreements/commitments are on track or have been fulfilled. When details are ambiguous, you ask questions to confirm you understand the expectations. Team members can easily follow your work, understand where you left off, and what comes next. You are prepared and organized for meetings and presentations.

Your Experience

Experience & Education

  • A minimum of 5 years of recent full-time 2D and 3D modeling, in Autocad and/or Inventor, in a work environment similar to our business, such as Architectural experience or another exhibit house.
  • Ability to work extended hours, possibly weekends and holidays, during peak periods which occur frequently throughout the year. Strong levels of perseverance are needed to push through the very tough work schedule.
  • A degree is not required for this position, but is always a plus. Architectural or Engineering degrees are the most relevant.

Travel & Mobility

  • Willingness and ability to travel infrequently (less than 5%) for site inspection, data capture and Engineering support

Your Impact

IIn your role, you will have influence and responsibility over construction drawings and assigned floorplans with influence over shop and PM success, CNC programming, project timelines and installation teams and schedule.
