Standalone energy storage is rapidly transforming the North American energy markets, because it is cheaper than new natural gas plants, faster to build than fossil peakers or transmission, and able to perform diverse energy services. Plus Power partners with electricity system operators, utilities, and investors to originate, develop, finance, own and operate standalone energy storage projects that provide critical services to the wholesale electric market. Plus Power's team applies an intentional mindset to energy storage development by using a data-driven approach to development and operations.

At Plus Power, we are focused on solving hard climate problems, profitably. Our team praises Plus Power's culture and excels through our game-changing mission and supportive ecosystem.

Plus Power recruits outstanding energy project development professionals who are driven to build assets that decarbonize the U.S. energy markets and grow their own careers. Our team looks for data-driven and fact-based mindsets, engaging and collaborative behaviors, and personal growth-focused professionals.

We are seeking a Senior Project & Commissioning Engineer to join the Engineering, Procurement & Construction (EPC) team. This individual will work under the direction of the Senior Manager, EPC Engineering, and will provide technical engineering support for the design, construction, and commissioning of utility-scale standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) projects across designated regions in North America.

Key Responsibilities

  • Oversee and lead the technical deliverables associated with the design, construction, and commissioning of Plus Power's BESS projects in collaboration with third-party engineering and EPC firms
  • Support the EPC Leadership Team on a broad range of supplier and contractor management matters across multiple equipment vendors and construction firms
  • Partner with the Transmission, Interconnection, and Market Analysis teams in the definition, review, negotiation, and execution of interconnection agreements, with a focus on efficiently integrating BESS projects into the U.S. power grid
  • Assist with the preparation and issuance of RFQ/RFP packages to EPC contractors and Engineering consultants
  • Support the EPC Procurement team in developing and issuing project scopes of work, RFPs, schedules, budgets, cash flow projections and technical contract requirements
  • Attend meetings with various project stakeholders including developers, contractors, consultants, and utility companies
  • Travel to project sites before, during, and after construction to support a wide range of project-related tasks and activities
  • Provide input on permitting and regulatory applications and, when requested by the internal development team, respond to stakeholder inquiries

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, preferably with a focus in Power Engineering
  • 5 - 7+ years of experience in project engineering, development (including permitting and regulatory approvals), procurement/contracting, and construction management, specifically within the power generation, utility, and transmission industries
  • Experience with the design, construction, commissioning, and operation of high-voltage utility substations, switchyards, and transmission systems; experience working for or with a major utility is a plus
  • Experience leading projects in a cross functional team from initial feasibility evaluations to late-stage development, design, engineering, and construction
  • Understanding of key project development elements, including real property, permitting, regulatory matters, environmental compliance, interconnection, transmission, and related areas
  • Knowledge of and familiarity with market dynamics related to major equipment, engineering services, construction services, and labor
  • Strong understanding of the battery energy storage value proposition and/or the engineering fundamentals of battery energy storage projects
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Flexibility and ability to manage multiple initiatives simultaneously
  • Supportive, resourceful, and willing to take on new responsibilities
  • Persuasive, clear, and concise written and verbal communication skills
  • Creative and independent thinker with a demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a diverse, fast-paced, and geographically dispersed team environment
  • Proficient in the Microsoft suite of tools and applications including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, MS Project, SharePoint, and Excel
  • Proficient in AutoCAD or equivalent, including Revu Bluebeam
  • Ability to travel intermittently, up to approximately 30% over the course of a year
