Senior Software Engineer Startup information

What are some unique challenges senior software engineers face when working at a startup compared to a larger company?

Senior Software Engineers at startups often navigate a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment where priorities can shift quickly. Unlike at larger organizations with established processes and specialized teams, startup engineers may wear multiple hats, handling everything from architecture decisions to hands-on coding and even DevOps tasks. This role typically requires a high degree of autonomy and the ability to make impactful technical decisions with limited resources. The collaborative nature means frequent interaction with product managers, designers, and often even company leadership, creating opportunities for broad influence but also demanding strong communication and adaptability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior software engineer at a startup, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Software Engineer at a startup, you need advanced programming abilities, architectural design experience, and a solid understanding of software development lifecycles, typically backed by a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with modern frameworks, cloud platforms (like AWS or Azure), version control systems (such as Git), and agile methodologies is essential, with certifications in relevant technologies being advantageous. Strong problem-solving, adaptability, and effective communication skills help you navigate the dynamic startup environment and mentor junior team members. These skills are crucial to rapidly building scalable solutions, driving innovation, and supporting business growth in a fast-paced and often ambiguous setting.

What does a senior software engineer do at a startup?

A Senior Software Engineer at a startup is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining the core software products or services. They often take on a broad range of tasks, including coding, code reviews, system architecture, and mentoring junior team members. In a startup environment, they may also contribute to product decisions, help set technical direction, and quickly adapt to changing priorities. Their role is critical in building scalable, reliable solutions while fostering innovation and collaboration within a small, fast-paced team.

The Opportunity

Cordova is seeking a high-performing Senior Software Developer to lead the design, development, and modernization of our client’s Guidewire Cloud platform. This is a senior-level role that demands a rare blend of deep Guidewire expertise and proficiency in a modern full-stack environment.

You will act as a technical anchor, providing leadership to project stakeholders and mentoring junior developers. Your goal will be to deliver high-quality, scalable, and secure software solutions that leverage Java/Gosu to drive the future of insurance technology.

Key Responsibilities

Guidewire Platform Leadership

  • End-to-End Implementation: Lead the configuration and customization of PolicyCenter, ClaimCenter, and BillingCenter.

  • Gosu Development: Design and develop Gosu-based business rules, product models, workflows, and data models.

  • Integrations: Create and modify complex Guidewire Integrations using REST APIs, SOAP, message-based systems, and batch jobs.

  • Cloud Upgrades: Perform Guidewire Cloud upgrades and integrate with Enterprise Engage (Portal/Edge) and DataHub/InfoCenter.

Architecture & Development

  • Full-Stack Coding: Design and deploy applications utilizing Java/Gosu.

  • Database Management: Build, maintain, and monitor SQL databases and related software to support high-performance website operations.

  • Standards Advocacy: Help define and enforce software development patterns, design standards, and best practices.

  • Quality Assurance: Participate in rigorous code reviews, unit testing, and performance tuning to ensure 99.9% application reliability.

Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Technical Mentorship: Serve as the go-to resource for Software Developers, providing guidance on coding practices and complex problem-solving.

  • Stakeholder Alignment: Coordinate with business analysts and user departments to translate complex business requirements into technical design specifications.

  • Agile Excellence: Thrive in an Agile/Scrum environment, actively contributing to sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives.

The Ideal Candidate

Experience & Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in a related field or an equivalent combination of education and senior-level development experience.

  • Certifications: Guidewire Cloud Developer Certification is required.

  • Platform Expertise: Extensive experience with the Guidewire ecosystem and Java/Gosu.

  • Tech Stack: Strong proficiency in HTML5, JavaScript (React), and SQL Server.

  • Version Control: Expertise in Git or SVN.

Core Competencies

  • Architectural Mindset: Deep understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), clean code principles, and design patterns.

  • Communication: Exceptional written and oral communication skills, with the ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical teams.

  • Initiative: Ability to work on one’s own initiative, recognizing the critical timeliness of insurance-sector deliverables.
