What is a Senior SAS developer?

Senior SAS Developers are experienced professionals who specialize in using SAS (Statistical Analysis System) software to analyze complex data, develop statistical models, and create automated data processing solutions. They often design, program, test, and implement data-driven applications while ensuring data quality and integrity. These roles typically involve collaborating with business stakeholders, mentoring junior developers, and optimizing existing SAS programs for performance and efficiency.

What are some common challenges faced by senior SAS developers when working on large-scale data projects?

Senior SAS Developers often encounter challenges such as managing complex data integration tasks, optimizing code for performance with large data sets, and ensuring data quality and security. Collaborating with cross-functional teams—like data analysts, business stakeholders, and IT staff—requires strong communication skills to translate business requirements into efficient SAS solutions. Additionally, staying updated with new SAS features and regulatory compliance standards can be crucial for delivering successful outcomes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior SAS developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior SAS Developer, you need advanced proficiency in SAS programming, data analysis, and statistical modeling, often supported by a degree in computer science, statistics, or a related field. Expertise in SAS Base, SAS Macro, SQL, and familiarity with data management tools and platforms like Teradata or Oracle are typically required, along with relevant certifications such as SAS Certified Advanced Programmer. Strong problem-solving, communication, and leadership skills help you effectively manage projects and collaborate with cross-functional teams. These skills ensure accurate data solutions, efficient process automation, and successful project delivery in complex data environments.

What is the difference between Senior Sas Developer vs Data Analyst?

The roles overlap in data handling and SAS knowledge but differ in scope and primary responsibilities.

In this key role, you will set product direction and create roadmaps for Shared Apps including the administration experience through Environment Manager and System Manager, observability through Enterprise Session Monitor, and other Core UI applications such as Landing App and Theme Designer. With your enterprise platform, administration, observability, and customer workflow knowledge, you will help SAS build coherent, reliable, and customer-centered shared application experiences that align with Core UI platform and design foundations.

As the face of the Shared Applications portfolio, you will play a strategic and global role, partnering with engineering, design, architecture, product management, customer support, enablement, sales, and marketing teams. You will communicate roadmap priorities, product functionality, customer value, migration impacts, and release readiness to internal constituents, customers, partners, and community members.

  • Create and maintain a unified product roadmap for Environment Manager, System Manager, Enterprise Session Monitor, Landing App, Theme Designer, and related shared application experiences.
  • Translate business and customer needs into technical, functional, and non-functional requirements that engineering, design, and architecture teams can execute.
  • Define user personas and use cases for administrators, platform operators, end users, and internal teams that depend on shared Viya application experiences.
  • Drive product development and collaborate with software development teams, UX designers, architects, program management, and dependent product teams.
  • Prioritize roadmap tradeoffs across administration, tenant management, observability, onboarding, theming, modernization, reliability, and customer-visible quality.
  • Coordinate cross-app dependencies, transition impacts, release readiness, and migration/deprecation planning for shared application capabilities.
  • Present product vision, roadmap, workflow improvements, and software demonstrations to internal constituents, customers, and leadership audiences.
  • Support product launches and knowledge transfer of Shared Apps functionality to marketing, sales, support, enablement, and customer-facing teams.
  • Embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability. These are our values and influence everything we do.

Required qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in Product Management, technical product strategy, enterprise software, platform administration, observability, or related functions in the technology industry.
  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in Business, Marketing, Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Experience as an administrator, operator, product manager, or product owner for enterprise software deployments, platform administration, tenant management, observability, or customer-facing platform applications.
  • Experience building or delivering technical solutions that solve customer, administrator, or operational problems.
  • Experience with enterprise administration workflows, observability/monitoring, release readiness, UX collaboration, and migration/change management.
  • Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.

Additional competencies, knowledge and skills

  • Communication- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to engage in technical and business discussions with customers, partners, administrators, product teams, and engineering leaders.
  • Critical Thinking- Excellent critical thinking skills with a demonstrated history of making good prioritization decisions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Customer Focused- Ability to connect customer/admin workflow needs with platform capabilities, engineering tradeoffs, and product strategy.
  • Comfortable delivering presentations, demos, workshops, roadmap reviews, release updates, and technical/product content to a range of audiences.
  • Ability to innovate and define creative shared application experiences that improve consistency, reliability, and customer value.
  • A self-starter with a bias toward action and the ability to balance getting details right while still moving fast.
  • Experience with SAS technology and solutions, nice to have
