What is a SAS administrator?

A SAS administrator uses proprietary software developed by the SAS Institute to create solutions for businesses and organizations. SAS administrators often work as part of a team of professionals, contributing their knowledge of server and desktop administration. Their duties include writing and testing code based on the desired configuration for a project, as well as updating existing systems. SAS administrators must understand the hardware and software interactions of a business to manage key components of the SAS integration. Regarding experience and qualifications, employers usually prefer a bachelor’s or master’s degree in computer programming. Strong statistics and mathematics skills are also desirable for this career.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a SAS administrator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a SAS Administrator, you need expertise in SAS software, system administration, and data management, typically backed by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with SAS Management Console, UNIX/Linux operating systems, scripting languages, and relevant SAS certifications is highly valued. Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills help administrators troubleshoot issues and collaborate effectively with users and IT teams. These capabilities ensure reliable system performance, data security, and efficient support for analytics operations.

What are some typical challenges a SAS administrator might face when managing user access and data security?

SAS Administrators often encounter challenges in balancing the need for user access with maintaining strict data security protocols. Managing permissions across multiple users and groups can become complex, especially in large organizations with sensitive data. Administrators must stay vigilant against unauthorized access and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, often collaborating closely with IT and data governance teams. Regular audits, clear documentation, and continuous training are key practices to address these challenges effectively.

What is the difference between Sas Administrator vs Data Analyst?

We're a leader in data and AI. Through our software and services, we inspire customers around the world to transform data into intelligence - and questions into answers.
We're also a debt-free multi-billion-dollar organization on our path to IPO-readiness. If you're looking for a dynamic, fulfilling career coupled with flexibility and world-class employee experience, you'll find it here.
About the job
As an Enablement and Integration Engineer on the SAS Managed Cloud Activation and Enablement Services team, you will onboard, migrate, and upgrade customers across hosted and remote managed environments.
You will use your technical expertise to install, integrate, manage, and troubleshoot SAS and third-party enterprise software solutions. Working with customers, developers, analysts, implementation teams, R&D, and vendors, you will help define technical requirements, resolve delivery risks, and ensure solutions meet customer needs and SAS hosting standards.
You will also support sales opportunity reviews, conduct upgrade and migration planning, estimate costs, update documentation, and process ad-hoc operational requests. As a customer advocate, you will help improve our tools, processes, and services while enabling customers to maximize the value of their SAS investment.
As an Enablement Integration Engineer, you will:
  • Lead the technical onboarding, migration, and upgrade of SAS Managed Cloud customers across hosted and remote managed environments.

  • Install, configure, integrate, administer, maintain, and troubleshoot SAS and third-party enterprise software based on technical documentation and customer requirements.

  • Collaborate directly with customers, analysts, developers, implementation teams, support organizations, R&D, and third-party vendors to deliver effective technical solutions.

  • Review sales opportunities before contract finalization to ensure proposed technologies - including Kubernetes, cloud storage, networking, and identity and access management - meet customer requirements and SAS hosting standards.

  • Evaluate and plan upgrades and migrations for hosted SAS environments, ensuring software compatibility, operational readiness, and minimal customer disruption.

  • Develop infrastructure, software, and service cost estimates to support accurate planning, budgeting, and project profitability tracking.

  • Maintain technical and operational documentation while improving tools, processes, services, and delivery capabilities.

  • Manage operational and ad-hoc requests through Jira and ServiceNow, including software order reviews, server decommissioning, CMDB updates, and documentation changes.

  • Serve as a customer advocate by communicating clearly with global internal and external stakeholders and helping customers maximize the value of their SAS investment.

  • Contribute to team success by sharing knowledge, mentoring colleagues, removing obstacles, and identifying innovative ways to improve the customer and employee experience.

  • Develop technical expertise through hands-on learning, collaboration with R&D, cross-team assignments, and individualized professional development plans.

  • Work flexible hours, including occasional weekends, when required to support global customers and critical delivery activities.
  • Embrace curiosity, passion, authenticity and accountability. These are our values and influence everything we do.

Required qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or related quantitative field.

  • Technical knowledge of internal workings, diagnostic tools and features of complex systems.

  • Aptitude for visualization of solutions for complex problems.

  • Understand the interdependencies between multiple systems and software within a computing infrastructure.

  • Equivalent combination of related education, training and experience may be considered in place of the above qualifications.
