Job description

Lab Summary:
Samsung Research America's Emerging Technologies Group identifies and incubates innovative external technologies that accelerate Samsung's development and market position of its industry-leading consumer devices and medical equipment. We proactively research and create incubation, partnership & investment opportunities with breakthrough technologies that lay the foundation for the future of Samsung's core products & services across smartphones, tablets, wearables, PCs, TVs, appliances, and more. In addition to driving both the technical and business processes to validate and commercialize new technologies in Samsung's existing products, we maintain a strong pulse on the market to find the next big opportunity.
Position Summary:
The Sr. Manager, Emerging Tech - Consumer Health and Medical Equipment Technologies is a senior individual contributor responsible for researching and developing collaborations with external innovations in consumer health technology and formulating strategies to deliver differentiated solutions through Samsung's device ecosystem. This role is primarily focused on the consumer health experiences delivered through Samsung's smartphone and wearable platforms, with exposure to Samsung's Health and Medical Equipment portfolio - including ultrasound systems, digital X-ray, and CT imaging - as an additional dimension of the role.
The ideal candidate brings deep familiarity with Health AI and novel sensor technologies with an understanding of how advances in AI-driven sensing, digital biomarkers, and on-device health intelligence can elevate Samsung's consumer health products. They will operate as an individual contributor who drives impact through influence - building alignment across internal R&D and product teams, external partners, and senior leadership without direct organizational authority over any of these stakeholders.
In this role, you will track the leading edge of health technology research, navigate the North American startup ecosystem and top university research programs, build compelling cases for Samsung leadership, and foster the external partnerships needed to advance Samsung's position in consumer health innovation.
Position Responsibilities:
  • Domain Intelligence & Technology Foresight: Maintain deep, continuously updated expertise in consumer health and digital health technology - including digital biomarkers, AI-powered health sensing, biosensor technologies, and remote health monitoring - and synthesize insights from academic publications, startup activity, and clinical research to inform Samsung's technology strategy; stay broadly informed on medical equipment technology trends as a supplementary area of awareness
  • Health AI as a Core Lens: Apply strong working knowledge of Health AI - including AI/ML for health sensing and wearables, digital biomarker development, on-device inference, and multimodal health data analysis - to evaluate external innovations and identify where AI-enabled breakthroughs can most meaningfully advance Samsung's consumer health roadmap
  • Concept Development & Opportunity Framing: Identify and articulate new technology opportunities in consumer health, developing structured opportunity assessments that connect external innovations to Samsung's strategic priorities across its wearable, mobile, and home device platforms; develop awareness of adjacent opportunities within Samsung's Health and Medical Equipment business unit and engage that team directly to explore potential alignment
  • External Ecosystem Engagement: Actively navigate the North American startup ecosystem and engage leading university research groups in consumer health, wearable sensing, clinical AI, and adjacent domains; build and maintain a broad, trusted network of founders, researchers, VCs, and technology transfer offices to ensure Samsung has early visibility into breakthrough innovations; depth and quality of this network is a highly valued attribute for this role
  • Partnership Development & Management: Serve as the primary liaison between external partners and Samsung's internal R&D and product teams; lead technology evaluations, structure and drive proof-of-concept engagements, and advance the most promising collaborations toward partnership, commercialization, investment, or M&A outcomes; serve as an effective internal champion for partners' goals and vision, advocating their needs to internal stakeholders across organizational boundaries
  • Executive Advocacy & Communication: Build rigorous, evidence-backed opportunity assessments for priority technology areas and present them persuasively to senior Samsung leadership across R&D and product units globally; translate complex technical concepts into clear strategic narratives that resonate with both technology and business audiences
  • Influence Without Authority: Drive alignment and momentum across multiple internal teams - spanning Samsung Research America, Samsung's global health R&D labs, the MX business unit, and the Health and Medical Equipment unit - without direct management authority; build trust and followership through expertise, communication, and relationship skills
  • Cross-Functional & Cross-Geo Coordination: Coordinate cross-functional project activities across geographies, set milestones, and drive accountability to timelines and deliverables across teams with varying priorities and reporting structures
  • Regulatory Awareness: Maintain general familiarity with the regulatory landscape governing digital health and medical devices (e.g., FDA frameworks for software as a medical device, clinical validation concepts) sufficient to identify where regulatory considerations may affect a partnership or technology evaluation, without serving as a regulatory authority
  • Ambiguity Navigation: Proactively structure early-stage, loosely defined opportunities into actionable frameworks and drive progress in situations where the path forward is not yet defined

Required Skills:
  • Master's degree in a technology, engineering, or life sciences discipline required (e.g., EE, BME, CS, or similar); post-graduate degree (PhD, MD, and/or MBA) or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience
  • 8+ years of professional experience in consumer health technology, digital health, or wearable devices, with roles spanning technology research, hardware/software development, or product management
  • Demonstrated expertise in Health AI technologies, including but not limited to AI/ML for wearable health sensing, digital biomarker development, on-device health inference, or multimodal health data analysis; this is a required qualification
  • Strong familiarity with biosensor technologies and the technical foundations of consumer health sensing (e.g., PPG, ECG, bioimpedance, accelerometry)
  • Established network within the North American consumer health and digital health startup ecosystem and among leading university research groups in wearable health, sensing, and health AI; breadth and depth of this network is a highly sought attribute
  • Proven experience presenting technology opportunity assessments and recommendations to senior leadership audiences
  • Effective interpersonal and relationship management skills, with demonstrated ability to drive outcomes across organizational boundaries without direct authority - this is a core requirement for the role, which is structured as an individual contributor position
  • Experience leading complex, multi-team, and cross-geographic projects to successful outcomes
  • Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills, with the ability to adapt complex technical narratives to diverse audiences
  • General awareness of the digital health and medical device regulatory environment sufficient to inform technology evaluations
  • Willingness to travel domestically and internationally (10%)

Special Attributes:
  • Familiarity with medical imaging modalities (ultrasound, digital X-ray, CT) and the clinical contexts in which they are used
  • Prior exposure to the clinical diagnostics and medical equipment industry, even if not a primary area of expertise
  • Genuine intellectual passion for health technology and a conviction that AI and advanced sensing can meaningfully improve consumer health outcomes
  • Entrepreneurial instincts: energized by early-stage ambiguity, skilled at creating structure and momentum from loosely defined opportunities
  • Highly effective at managing through influence - able to align stakeholders, build coalitions, and drive progress without relying on organizational authority
  • Great communication skills: clear, patient, and well adapted to audience and situation - equally fluent with engineers, clinicians, executives, and startup founders
  • Analytical rigor to ground technology enthusiasm in structured, evidence-backed recommendations, and to respond credibly to executive scrutiny and objections
  • Strong organizational skills to manage a diverse, concurrent portfolio of partnerships and incubation initiatives as an individual contributor
  • Collaborative: willing to advocate for others' ideas as vigorously as their own, and to serve as a bridge between external partners and internal teams
