Position Summary:

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Senior Planner to support a wide range of complex planning activities in a fast-paced municipal environment. This role requires extensive knowledge of land use planning, intergovernmental coordination, and development review. The successful candidate will have planning experience, including work with city, regional, or jurisdictional planning efforts, and demonstrate the ability to manage complex projects while engaging with the public and cross-sector stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide front-line support at the public planning counter, answering inquiries and assisting residents, developers, and stakeholders.
  • Assist senior staff on planning studies, special projects, and long-range planning initiatives.
  • Review development proposals and site plans for compliance with applicable codes, plans, and regulations.
  • Prepare, compile, and present planning reports and documentation for internal and external review, including land use and entitlement summaries.
  • Participate in the evaluation of rezoning applications, ordinance amendments, special use permits, variances, and related requests.
  • Coordinate and support community review processes for both public and private development projects.
  • Act as a liaison between the City, community groups, developers, governmental agencies, and elected officials in the development of neighborhood or district plans.
  • Provide accurate and timely information to the public regarding planning processes, regulations, and permit requirements.
  • Support the City Planner or Supervisor in addressing and resolving planning-related issues.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Solid understanding of urban planning principles, land use regulations, and community development practices.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, zoning codes, site plans, and related planning documents.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with GIS and Internet-based research tools preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; able to explain complex regulations in simple terms to the public.
  • Excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Creative problem-solving ability with a keen attention to detail.
  • Capability to apply planning ordinances and zoning codes to real-world site conditions.
  • Experience or interest in graphic design, sketching, or rendering site plans using design software is a plus.
  • Able to effectively manage time, prioritize multiple projects, and work independently or as part of a team.
Qualifications:
  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Urban Planning, Public Policy, Geography, or a related field.
  • Minimum 5 years of progressively responsible experience in land use or municipal planning.
  • Experienced in jurisdictional or intergovernmental coordination, comprehensive plan development, and policy analysis.
