Are proofreaders still in demand?

Proofreaders, including senior proofreaders, continue to be in demand as companies and publishers seek accurate and polished content. The role often requires strong language skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with editing tools, with opportunities available in publishing, media, and digital content sectors.

Is AI replacing proofreaders?

AI tools are increasingly used to assist proofreaders by identifying grammar, spelling, and style errors more efficiently. However, senior proofreaders still play a vital role in making nuanced editing decisions, ensuring tone consistency, and handling complex editing tasks that require human judgment. AI serves as a complement rather than a complete replacement in the proofreading process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Proofreader, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Proofreader, you need exceptional attention to detail, advanced grammar and language skills, and several years of professional proofreading experience, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with style guides (such as AP, Chicago, or MLA), track-changes tools in Microsoft Word, and content management systems is typically required. Strong organizational skills, time management, and the ability to provide constructive feedback help distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure high-quality, error-free content that enhances brand credibility and meets publication standards.

What is the difference between Senior Proofreader vs Copy Editor?

AspectSenior ProofreaderCopy Editor

Work EnvironmentPublishing houses, media companies, freelance projectsPublishing, marketing agencies, corporate communications
Employer & Industry UsageUsed across publishing, journalism, and media industriesCommon in publishing, advertising, and content creation sectors
Primary FocusChecking for grammatical, spelling, and punctuation errorsImproving clarity, style, structure, and overall content quality

While both roles require strong language skills and attention to detail, a Senior Proofreader primarily focuses on error correction, whereas a Copy Editor enhances content clarity and style. The roles often overlap but serve distinct purposes in the editing process.

How long does it take to proofread 50,000 words?

A senior proofreader typically reviews about 2,000 to 3,000 words per hour, so proofreading 50,000 words generally takes approximately 17 to 25 hours of focused work. Factors such as complexity of the text, required accuracy, and use of editing tools can influence the total time needed.

What are Senior Proofreaders?

Senior Proofreaders are experienced professionals responsible for reviewing written content to detect and correct errors in grammar, spelling, punctuation, and formatting. They often oversee the work of other proofreaders, ensuring that all documents meet high standards of quality and consistency. In addition to error correction, Senior Proofreaders may also advise on style, clarity, and adherence to brand guidelines. Their expertise is crucial in industries such as publishing, advertising, and corporate communications. Typically, they have several years of proofreading experience and a strong command of language rules.

What are some common challenges Senior Proofreaders face when working with fast-paced publishing teams?

Senior Proofreaders often juggle tight deadlines and high volumes of content, especially when working within fast-paced publishing or marketing teams. Balancing accuracy with speed can be challenging, as they must ensure all documents are error-free while meeting strict turnaround times. Additionally, they frequently collaborate with writers, editors, and designers, requiring strong communication skills to clarify queries and maintain quality standards. Adapting to different style guides and managing last-minute changes are also typical aspects of the role.

What qualifications do you need to become a proofreader?

To become a senior proofreader, candidates typically need a strong command of language, excellent attention to detail, and proficiency in editing tools or style guides. A bachelor's degree in English, journalism, or a related field is often preferred, along with several years of proofreading experience in relevant industries.

We make it our mission to ensure more genuine people have digital access to opportunities, and businesses have access to more genuine people. Our technology draws on diverse and reliable data to create a single point of truth for identity and address verification.
With over 30 years of experience behind us our team and technology are focused on enabling safe and rewarding digital lives for everyone. Regardless of age, location or background, genuine people everywhere should be able to digitally prove who they are and where they live.
About the team and role
GBG Documents & Biometrics
The Documents and Biometrics division at GBG is a globally distributed team united by a shared mission to build trusted identity solutions that help organisations verify people and documents with confidence. We are a group of driven, like-minded individuals who thrive on rolling up our sleeves and tackling complex, real-world challenges together. Our culture is high-performance and outcome-focused, balancing clear accountability with an open, approachable way of working. Curiosity sits at the heart of what we do - we are always inquisitive, continuously questioning how we can improve our products, our ways of working, and the value we deliver to customers around the world.
Senior Product Manager - Identity Verification / Identity Proofing
You will own the commercial success of key Identity Verification capabilities (e.g., document verification, biometrics, liveness, fraud signals, orchestration/routing, APIs/SDKs and no-code configuration). You'll set strategy, build a defensible roadmap, and drive measurable revenue growth by translating market opportunities into shipped product and compelling propositions.
This is a senior, externally-facing role: you will represent the product with enterprise customers, partners, analysts, and at events-articulating value, differentiation, and ROI with confidence.
What you will do
Product strategy & commercial outcomes
  • Define and maintain a clear product strategy aligned to company growth goals (ARR, retention, attach rate, win-rate, margin).
  • Identify, validate, and launch commercially attractive use-cases, sectors, and propositions within identity (e.g., regulated onboarding, account protection, high-risk transactions).
  • Build and continuously refine pricing/packaging hypotheses and revenue expansion paths (new SKU(s), bundles, tiering, consumption metrics, routing optimisation, partner channels).

Roadmap ownership & prioritisation
  • Own the end-to-end roadmap: discovery → definition → delivery → launch → iteration, balancing customer value, revenue impact, risk reduction and delivery constraints.
  • Run prioritisation using transparent frameworks (e.g., RICE, WSJF, cost of delay), and ensure decisions are explicitly tied to customer and revenue outcomes.
  • Maintain an outcomes-driven backlog with clear problem statements, hypotheses, and acceptance criteria.

Market, customer & competitive intelligence
  • Conduct structured discovery: customer interviews, funnel analysis, loss reviews, sales/CS insights, and market scanning to identify growth opportunities and threats.
  • Own competitive positioning and differentiation narrative across IDV, including fraud resistance and conversion performance (where measurable).

Business cases & value articulation
  • Create business cases for major initiatives (revenue, cost-to-serve, margin impact, delivery cost, risk/compliance, operational load).
  • Build customer-facing value stories: conversion uplift, fraud loss avoidance, operational efficiency, compliance enablement, and time-to-integrate.
  • Partner with Sales/Commercial to enable revenue: playbooks, value calculators, objection handling, case studies, and pitch narratives.

Go-to-market leadership
  • Lead product GTM planning with Marketing, Sales, RevOps, Legal/Compliance and Customer Success (launch readiness, enablement, messaging, roll-out plans).
  • Define success metrics and post-launch learning loops (adoption, activation, retention, conversion, false reject/accept rates where applicable).

Stakeholder leadership & external representation
  • Represent the product internally and externally through briefings, demos, presentations, and events.
  • Confidently engage large/complex customers (security, risk, compliance, engineering, procurement) and navigate senior stakeholder conversations.
  • Influence without authority across Engineering, Data/ML, Design, Sales, Customer Success, Security and Compliance.

Vendor/partner & commercial optimisation
  • Manage/shape vendor and partner strategy (e.g., orchestration, document/biometric components, data sources), including performance, cost, and routing decisions to optimise success rates and unit economics.

Skills we're looking for
Core skills
  • Extensive experience of Product Management experience (B2B SaaS and/or platform/API products preferred).
  • Strong, demonstrable experience in Identity Verification / Identity Proofing, including familiarity with document verification and/or biometrics/liveness and common market use-cases.
  • Proven ability to own a roadmap, make trade-offs, and deliver meaningful outcomes with cross-functional teams.
  • Proven capability in commercial thinking: defining customer value, building business cases, and identifying revenue generation options (pricing/packaging, expansion, new propositions).
  • Strong communication skills, including comfort presenting to senior audiences and representing the organisation externally.
  • Hands-on experience with modern discovery practices and metrics-driven product management

Preferred / nice-to-have
  • Experience with leading Identity Proofing solutions that combine the Optical Processing of Identity Documents and/or Facial Biometrics.
  • Experience with platformisation (shared IDV services, configuration/self-serve controls, reusable components).
  • Experience with enterprise procurement, security reviews, and regulated onboarding contexts (Financial Services, Gambling, Partner Markets, Telco, Marketplace, Crypto, etc.).
  • Familiarity with experimentation, funnel optimisation, and conversion metrics in verification journeys.
  • Exposure to ML-supported decisioning, fraud/adversarial thinking, and evaluation metrics (without requiring you to be an ML engineer).
