What is a senior project designer?

A Senior Project Designer is an experienced professional responsible for leading the design aspects of large and complex projects, often within industries such as architecture, interior design, or engineering. They oversee the creative process, collaborate with clients and stakeholders, and ensure that the project vision is executed effectively from concept to completion. Senior Project Designers also mentor junior staff, coordinate with other departments, and ensure that designs meet both aesthetic and functional requirements while staying within budget and timeline constraints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior project designer?

To excel as a Senior Project Designer, you need advanced design skills, a relevant degree (such as architecture or interior design), and extensive experience managing design projects. Proficiency with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite, along with knowledge of building codes and project management methodologies, is often required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and creative problem-solving abilities help you collaborate effectively and drive design innovation. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality, client-focused solutions within project timelines and budgets.

What are the main challenges senior project designers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Senior Project Designers often juggle several projects at various stages, which requires balancing creative vision with practical constraints such as budget, timelines, and client expectations. One of the main challenges is ensuring consistent quality and cohesive design direction across all projects, while effectively prioritizing tasks and delegating responsibilities within the design team. Additionally, frequent coordination with other departments—like engineering, construction, and project management—demands strong communication and problem-solving skills. Staying organized and adaptable is key to successfully navigating these complexities.

Are you a senior wastewater engineer ready to step into a definitive leadership role and shape the water infrastructure of one of the fastest-growing regions in the country? We are seeking an accomplished Senior Project Manager – Wastewater to lead the planning, design, and execution of complex municipal wastewater systems throughout Central Florida. In this position, you will serve as a high-impact technical authority, client strategist, and team leader, taking total ownership of projects from initial concept through permitting, final construction, startup, and closeout.

Joining our team means taking a central seat in a dynamic, growth-oriented engineering organization dedicated to building resilient public infrastructure. You will manage multidisciplinary project teams, act as a trusted partner to local utilities, and actively expand our regional water and wastewater footprint. This is an exceptional opportunity for a Florida Professional Engineer who wants to blend technical expertise with executive project ownership, strategic client development, and long-term career advancement.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lifecycle Project Leadership: Direct complex wastewater infrastructure projects—including treatment facilities, pump stations, collection/conveyance networks, force mains, and reuse systems—from early planning and permitting through construction support, startup, and closeout.

  • Multidisciplinary Team Integration: Lead, mentor, and coordinate internal teams of engineers, designers, and subconsultants to produce rigorous design plans, technical reports, specifications, and construction deliverables on schedule and within budget.

  • Client Stewardship & Advisory: Serve as the primary point of contact and technical consultant for municipal, public, and utility clients, leading workshops, public-engagement activities, and key progress presentations to build long-term client trust.

  • Regulatory Oversight: Navigate complex regulatory environments, ensuring all project designs fully comply with FDEP, Florida Water Management District, and local utility standards.

  • Technical Quality Control: Provide senior-level technical review for calculations, design reports, process selections, cost estimates, and contract documents to ensure practical, sustainable engineering solutions.

  • Financial & Contractual Governance: Manage project scopes, labor forecasts, work plans, earned value, invoicing, and contract negotiations; proactively identify and mitigate technical, scheduling, and financial risks.

  • Strategic Business Development: Identify emerging municipal market opportunities in Central Florida, lead high-impact proposal pursuits, participate in shortlist interviews, and grow client accounts.

  • Practice Mentorship: Inspire and guide developing engineers and junior project leaders, promoting technical excellence and professional growth within the division.

Required Qualifications

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, or a closely related discipline.

  • Licensure: Active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida (or ability to obtain Florida PE reciprocity within six months).

  • Experience: 10+ years of progressive water and wastewater engineering experience, with at least 5 years in project management or project leadership roles.

  • Technical Expertise: Demonstrated background leading wastewater treatment plants, collection/conveyance pipelines, force mains, lift stations, or reclaimed water projects.

  • Regulatory Knowledge: Solid working command of Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) regulations and regional water management district permitting protocols.

  • Software & Tools: Proficiency with standard engineering analysis software, hydrologic/hydraulic modeling tools, and project management applications (e.g., MS Project, Primavera P6).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Client Network: Established relationships with municipal utility leaders and public agencies across Central Florida and Polk County.

  • Delivery Methods: Hands-on experience with alternative project delivery methods (Design-Build, CMAR) and complex construction-phase administration.

  • Facility Scale: Proven background in treatment plant expansion, rehabilitation, or advanced process improvement.

  • Certifications: PMP (Project Management Professional) or BCEE (Board Certified Environmental Engineer) certifications.
