What are the main challenges Senior Project Designers face when managing multiple projects simultaneously?

Senior Project Designers often juggle several projects at various stages, which requires balancing creative vision with practical constraints such as budget, timelines, and client expectations. One of the main challenges is ensuring consistent quality and cohesive design direction across all projects, while effectively prioritizing tasks and delegating responsibilities within the design team. Additionally, frequent coordination with other departments—like engineering, construction, and project management—demands strong communication and problem-solving skills. Staying organized and adaptable is key to successfully navigating these complexities.

What is a Senior Project Designer?

A Senior Project Designer is an experienced professional responsible for leading the design aspects of large and complex projects, often within industries such as architecture, interior design, or engineering. They oversee the creative process, collaborate with clients and stakeholders, and ensure that the project vision is executed effectively from concept to completion. Senior Project Designers also mentor junior staff, coordinate with other departments, and ensure that designs meet both aesthetic and functional requirements while staying within budget and timeline constraints.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Project Designer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Project Designer, you need advanced design skills, a relevant degree (such as architecture or interior design), and extensive experience managing design projects. Proficiency with industry-standard software like AutoCAD, Revit, and Adobe Creative Suite, along with knowledge of building codes and project management methodologies, is often required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and creative problem-solving abilities help you collaborate effectively and drive design innovation. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality, client-focused solutions within project timelines and budgets.

Description

Great work starts with a good conversation and a team that's excited to build something meaningful together.

Cline is an integrated, nationwide design firm bringing architecture, interior design, planning, landscape architecture, land planning, and branding under one roof. We partner with clients to shape places people truly experience-homes, neighborhoods, communities, and workplaces that feel intentional, human, and rooted in purpose.

We're always looking for curious, collaborative teammates: people who communicate clearly, take pride in craft, and believe the best ideas get better when disciplines work side-by-side. If you're drawn to thoughtful design, strong relationships, and a culture that supports growth (and celebrates wins along the way), we'd love to connect.

Explore our open roles and apply today-let's build what's next, together.

We are seeking a talented Senior Project Designer for our Charlotte office. The ideal candidate is creative, self-motivated, and possesses both experience with, and a passion for, building design. Responsibilities include providing planning and design in the development of small/medium/large multi-family projects.

  Day to Day Responsibilities:

  • Play a strategic role in advancing the quality of design in the firm
  • Oversee/mentor Project Designers and staff interested in design
  • Prepare presentation materials and participate in design presentations to clients through the course of the project
  • Collaborate with the in-house project team and others to develop the design and maintain design integrity during DD, CD, and CA phases
  • Collaborate with Team Leader and/or Senior Project Managers to understand and solve client design goals
  • Coordinate project designs
  • Maintain a functional knowledge of current building and zoning codes
  • Perform other duties that may be assigned from time to time

What we look for:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Architecture from an accredited university
  • A portfolio that demonstrates a strong design aptitude
  • Experience with multi-family and mixed-used projects preferred
  • Professional licensure preferred
  • Proficiency in 3D modeling, visualization, and graphic software
  • Revit experience preferred
  • Minimum 10 years of professional experience
  • Excellent communication, written, and presentation skills
  • Ability to interact positively with others, to solve problems, and to constructively communicate those solutions

We offer a full benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, disability insurance, supplementary insurance, flexible spending, and 401k with employer contribution. In addition, PTO, professional development assistance, and other perks are provided.

Cline Design is an Equal Opportunity Employer and a participant in the Federal E-Verify program.

All applicants must be authorized to work in the US. Cline Design does not sponsor applicants for employment-based visas.
