Job description

Site: Shoal Creek
We are currently seeking a Senior Manager Engineering & Enviormental to join our production team at our Shoal Creek Mine, located in Oakman, Alabama. Shoal Creek Mine is one of the deepest underground coal mines in the United States. Located on the Black Warrior River, this site produces one of the highest qualities of met coal in the United States. With nine-foot-tall workings, a brand-new longwall, and 15+ years of projected coal reserves, Shoal Creek mine is an ideal place to work.
Located in between Jefferson, Walker, and Tuscaloosa counties in Alabama, this area offers beautiful rivers and lakes, landscapes, and rolling hills at the foot of the Appalachian Mountains. Oakman is about an hour from Birmingham and Tuscaloosa, both of which provide diverse, family-friendly communities with something for everyone, such as vibrant downtowns, safe, friendly neighborhoods, and excellent schools, including the University of Alabama and other area colleges.
Peabody's Shoal Creek Mine has a safety-first culture and strives to have zero recordable MSHA injuries/incidents.
Responsibilities:
Plan and coordinate engineering feasibility studies, mine plans, capital requirements, and mine designs for the mine and plant. Provide support as needed for new mine construction activity and operations.
Duties will include:
  • Manages Technical Services / Engineering personnel and performs mine engineering & environmental surveying to ensure accurate and proper procedures and measures are being utilized to control, monitor, record and report actual production, cost and performance data for all mining and reclamation activities at the mine.
  • Responsible for ensuring that accurate production and operating reports are compiled and submitted within the prescribed time limits to Mine Management and the Corporate Office.
  • Coordinates with Mine Management in the planning and projection of short-term mining plans and reclamation operations and submits projected production plans as requested.
  • Manages and provides input for the development of long-term mining plans and the mining/reclamation regulatory approvals needed for implementation.
  • Provides engineering assistance to Mine Management in the planning, layout and construction of the mine infrastructure including slopes and/or shafts, roof control, ventilation systems, haul roads, drainage systems, electrical power distribution systems, erosion control structures, and reclamation post-mining land use areas.
  • Reviews mining and reclamation operations and make recommendations to Mine Management and/or develop plans that would decrease operating costs or improve operating efficiency.
  • Manages, reviews and monitors all mining and reclamation activities to ensure compliance with State and Federal mining and reclamation laws and permits.
  • Coordinates with Mine Management in evaluating, developing and completing projects required to rectify any compliance problems found during regulatory agency's inspection.
  • Act as Company's representative during inspections conducted by State and Federal reclamation inspectors on both surface and underground areas as needed.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and applicable software to adequately model various systems at the mine for use in problem solving and the development of projects, production and cost analysis reports.
  • Provide technical assistance in project evaluations, proposed changes, testing and/or development for improved performance, efficiency and safety at the operation.
  • Coordinates and inspects construction projects performed by either mine personnel or outside contractors to ensure compliance with design plans or contract provisions.
  • Monitor employee work performance and take necessary corrective action consistent with company policy.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to other departments as needed to contribute to the overall success of the operation.

About You:
  • BS in Engineering.
  • Mine Engineering preferred.
  • Registered Professional Engineer
  • Minimum of eight (8) years' coal mining experience
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of management.
  • Ability to travel periodically
  • Ability to work overtime as needed
  • Must have strong up to date skills utilizing computer software such as, but not limited to, Excel, Word, AutoCAD/SurvCADD, etc.

Physical Requirements:
  • Must have the ability to wear required protective footwear, hearing and eye protection, and other personal protective equipment as required by Company and MSHA
  • Must have the ability to perform repetitive hand and wrist motions (push, pull, twist, handle), and have rapid reflex movements of the arms and legs and good hand to eye coordination
  • Must have the ability to lift/raise 10 - 50 lbs. without mechanical assistance frequently during the course of work shift
  • Must have the ability to work in extreme conditions, including but not limited to changing weather conditions, dust, mud, varying levels of noise from low to high, varying degrees of light and dark, in and around artificial light and in a confined work area
  • Must have the ability to stand for up to 4 hours per shift
  • Must have the ability to be seated for up to 4 hours to operate equipment or vehicles
  • Must have the ability to work from elevated positions, walk/climb up and down stairs/steps and climb on and off equipment and ladders

Job Summary
Responsible for directing the engineering and environmental activities at the mine site to include, but not limited to, the engineering, environmental permits and licenses, surveying, and other measures to plan, control and document the extraction of underground materials and raw coal, roof control, ventilation, coal loading, coal processing and reclamation requirements at the operation. Role Requirements
EDUCATION
• Bachelor's Degree in Mining Engineering with Environmental background. Advanced Degree in
Engineering or Business Administration preferred.
• Professional Engineering Certification, preferred. Ability to obtain in near future.
• AutoCAD, SurvCADD, COGO, Ventilation Modelling, SMCRA, HAZWOPER, and Microsoft Office.
• Solid comprehension of capital cost estimating, project cost control and schedule management
EXPERIENCE
• Minimum of 8-10 years of coal mining experience in underground and surface mine engineering.
• Ability to clearly communicate geologic concepts to non-technical personnel
• Strong working knowledge and experience in State and Federal mining and environmental and air
regulations
• Prior management/supervisory experience
• Communication and presentation experience to senior management
• Experience with Dam Engineering and Construction
• Experience with Success Factors, SAP, and Kronos a plus
