Medtronic's Coronary and Renal Denervation (CRDN) business is looking for a Senior Principal Software Engineer to be part of a high-performing team that is revolutionizing the design and development of energy based therapeutic medical devices to treat hypertension. In this role, you will leverage both your technical breadth and business acumen to support the next generation medical device software products.
This position is in Mounds View, MN. within the Coronary and Renal Denervation (CRDN) unit. At Medtronic, we bring bold ideas forward with speed and decisiveness to put patients first in everything we do. In-person exchanges are invaluable to our work. We are working on-site 4 days per week as part of our commitment to fostering a culture of professional growth and cross-functional collaboration as we work together to engineer the extraordinary. This role will require less than 10% of travel to enhance collaboration and ensure successful completion of projects.

A Day in the Life
In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Senior Principal Software Engineer role. This includes, but is not limited to the following:
The Senior Principal Software Engineer will serve as the technical leader and be responsible for architecting, designing, building, and scaling embedded software for next generation medical device. This role combines deep hands-on engineering expertise with architectural leadership, technical decision-making, and mentorship.
The Senior Principal Engineer drives technical strategy, ensures engineering excellence, and partners closely with cross-functional teams and business stakeholders to deliver impactful solutions. In general, the following responsibilities apply for the Senior Principal Software Engineer role, this includes, but is not limited to the following:
  • Architect, Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality medical device embedded software solutions as part of the software team in accordance with Agile principles and Scrum methodologies
  • Define and uphold architectural standards, design patterns, and best practices
  • Make high-impact technical decisions that align with long-term platform and business strategy
  • Review and guide system designs, APIs, data models, and integration approaches
  • Optimize system performance, reliability, and scalability
  • Ensure solutions meet security, privacy, and compliance requirements
  • Lead Risk Assessment activities and Requirements development.
  • Cross-functional team collaboration with HW and Systems partners, including integration team, testing team, Quality, System V&V...etc.
  • Drive continuous improvement through retrospectives and lessons learned
  • Provide leadership in solving engineering problems and fostering creativity and innovation in design and problem solutions
  • Follow Medical device regulations (IEC 62304, IEC 82304, FDA...etc.)
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and best practices in software development, and make recommendations for process improvements

The successful candidate will have:
  • 10+ years of technical leadership experience
  • Experience developing medical device software
  • Strong expertise in programming languages (C++, Python, C#)
  • Experience with various operating systems and tools - Linux OS, PetaLinux, Yocto, FreeRTOS
  • Experience with Containers
  • Strong knowledge of secure SDLC practices and software risk management

  • Bachelor's degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, engineering, or a related technical discipline and minimum of 10 years of work experience OR advanced degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, engineering, or a related technical discipline with 8 years of work experience.

Nice to Have
  • Knowledge of microservices architecture and event-driven systems
  • Familiarity with FPGA
  • Experience in regulated or enterprise-scale environments
  • Knowledge of cloud and connected medical devices
  • Excellent collaboration skills across engineering, quality, and regulatory teams
  • Pragmatic decision-making that balances compliance, security, and delivery velocity
  • Clear communication with both technical and non-technical stakeholders

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$178,400.00 - $267,600.00
This position is eligible for a short-term incentive called the Medtronic Incentive Plan (MIP).
The base salary range is applicable across the United States, excluding Puerto Rico and specific locations in California. The offered rate complies with federal and local regulations and may vary based on factors such as experience, certification/education, market conditions, and location. Compensation and benefits information pertains solely to candidates hired within the United States (local market compensation and benefits will apply for others).
The following benefits and additional compensation are available to those regular employees who work 20+ hours per week: Health, Dental and vision insurance, Health Savings Account, Healthcare Flexible Spending Account, Life insurance, Long-term disability leave, Dependent daycare spending account, Tuition assistance/reimbursement, and Simple Steps (global well-being program).
