What does a senior power electronics engineer do?

A Senior Power Electronics Engineer designs, develops, and tests electronic systems and components that control and convert electrical power efficiently. They often lead projects involving power supplies, converters, inverters, and motor drives for various applications like renewable energy, automotive, or industrial systems. In addition to hands-on engineering, they may mentor junior engineers, ensure compliance with industry standards, and collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver innovative power solutions. Their expertise helps optimize reliability, performance, and energy efficiency in electrical systems.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior power electronics engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Power Electronics Engineer, you need a strong background in electrical engineering principles, power conversion, and circuit design, typically supported by a bachelor’s or master’s degree in electrical engineering. Expertise in simulation tools like SPICE, MATLAB/Simulink, and familiarity with industry standards and certifications such as IPC or IEEE are commonly required. Strong problem-solving abilities, project management skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for leading teams and collaborating on complex projects. These competencies ensure reliable, innovative solutions in power electronics, driving efficiency and success in advanced engineering environments.

What are some typical challenges faced by senior power electronics engineers, and how can they be addressed within a project team?

Senior Power Electronics Engineers often encounter challenges such as managing thermal performance, ensuring EMI/EMC compliance, and optimizing circuit efficiency for high-power applications. These challenges are typically addressed by collaborating closely with cross-functional teams—including mechanical engineers, PCB designers, and firmware developers—to iterate on prototypes and run thorough simulations and testing. Regular design reviews and open communication channels within the team are key to identifying potential issues early and finding innovative solutions. Staying updated with the latest industry standards and leveraging the collective expertise of the team also play important roles in overcoming technical hurdles.

Job description

We made history and now we work to transform the future - for our customers, our communities and our families. You'll see your work on the road every day, helping people move freely and pursue their dreams. At Ford, you can build more than vehicles. Come build what matters.

In this position...
We are the movers of the world and the makers of the future.
We get up every day, roll up our sleeves, and build a better world together. At Ford, we're all part of something bigger than ourselves.
As Ford accelerates its transition to an all-electric future, we are seeking a Senior Buyer - Power Electronics to lead sourcing execution and support commodity strategy for critical power electronics across Ford's Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) portfolio.

What you'll do...

In this role, you will partner with engineering, finance, manufacturing, and global purchasing teams across North America, Europe, China, and joint ventures to deliver competitive cost, quality, delivery, and technology solutions for next-generation vehicle programs.
What you'll do...
Lead sourcing execution across multiple vehicle programs for power electronics commodities, which may include DC-DC Converters, On-Board Chargers (OBC), Power Inverters, Battery Management Systems (BMS), Printed Circuit Board Assemblies (PCBAs), electronic assemblies, or related components.
Own the end-to-end sourcing process, including supplier market assessments, RFIs/RFQs, supplier selection, commercial negotiations, and contract execution.
Drive competitive cost performance through should-cost analysis, benchmarking, cost estimating, and fact-based negotiations to achieve program targets and identify ongoing cost reduction opportunities.
Partner with engineering to understand product designs, bill of material (BOM) structures, manufacturing processes, and key cost drivers.
Develop and execute commodity and supply base strategies, including sourcing plans, pricing, tooling, and capacity planning.
Manage sourcing deliverables to ensure alignment with engineering milestones, vehicle program timing, and launch objectives.
Collaborate with global cross-functional teams to proactively identify and mitigate commercial, supply, and capacity risks.
Monitor supplier performance and drive continuous improvement across cost, quality, delivery, capacity, and technology

You'll have...
Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Supply Chain Management, Business, or a related field.
5+ years of experience in purchasing, strategic sourcing, supply chain, or a related commercial function within the automotive, electronics, or manufacturing industry.
Experience leading supplier negotiations, commercial sourcing activities, cost analysis, and contract execution.
Experience working cross-functionally with engineering and suppliers in a technical product development environment.
Knowledge of power electronics or electronic components, including manufacturing processes, BOM structures, tooling investments, and key cost drivers.
Strong analytical, negotiation, project management, and problem-solving skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities independently.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and supplier partners.
Even better, you may have...
Experience sourcing power electronics or electronic components from global Tier 1 suppliers.
Knowledge of Hybrid and Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) systems and high-voltage architectures.
Experience supporting global sourcing organizations across North America, Europe, China, and/or joint ventures.
Experience with purchasing systems, strategic sourcing tools, and cost modeling methodologies.
You may not check every box, or your experience may look a little different from what we've outlined, but if you think you can bring value to Ford Motor Company, we encourage you to apply!
As an established global company, we offer the benefit of choice. You can choose what your Ford future will look like: will your story span the globe, or keep you close to home? Will your career be a deep dive into what you love, or a series of new teams and new skills? Will you be a leader, a changemaker, a technical expert, a culture builder...or all of the above? No matter what you choose, we offer a work life that works for you, including:
Immediate medical, dental, vision and prescription drug coverage
Flexible family care days, paid parental leave, new parent ramp-up programs, subsidized back-up child care and more
Family building benefits including adoption and surrogacy expense reimbursement, fertility treatments, and more

This position is a salary grade 8 and ranges from $99,100-$166,200.
