What is a senior paralegal?

A senior paralegal is a legal assistant with more knowledge and experience in the field than other paralegals in their department. As a senior paralegal, you are often given more complex job duties and can work more independently than other staff. You prepare legal documents under the guidance of an attorney, study the intricacies of various areas of law, and contact clients and other members of the justice system on behalf of the attorney when they are not present. You may also offer clients a quote for services and attend the trial when necessary. The qualifications for a paralegal include associate degree and passing a certification exam.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior paralegal, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Paralegal, you need advanced legal research, document drafting, case management skills, and typically a paralegal certificate or relevant degree with several years of experience. Familiarity with legal research databases like Westlaw or LexisNexis, case management software, and e-filing systems is essential. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and clear communication set outstanding Senior Paralegals apart. These abilities ensure accurate, efficient support to attorneys and smooth legal operations, which are critical for case success.

What are some common challenges senior paralegals face when managing multiple complex cases simultaneously?

Senior Paralegals often juggle several high-priority cases at once, which requires strong organizational and time-management skills. Balancing deadlines, coordinating with attorneys, and ensuring accuracy in legal documentation can be demanding, especially when cases involve intricate legal issues or tight court schedules. Effective communication and proactive planning are essential to prevent errors and maintain workflow efficiency. Senior Paralegals typically rely on legal technology tools and collaborate closely with junior staff to delegate tasks appropriately and meet all deadlines.

What Is the Opportunity?

The Legal Solutions Center is a specialized team within Business Insurance - Legal Services, where non-attorney legal professionals apply sharp judgment, deep subject matter expertise, and a commitment to continuous improvement to support attorneys and business partners across compliance, product, marketing, and underwriting. As a Senior Consultant, you will independently manage a sophisticated and varied portfolio - from regulatory research and compliance-workflow management to the stewardship of regulated processes and contract review - with minimal oversight. You lead projects that advance the team's strategic priorities, and you are comfortable stepping into a leadership role within the team. You lead by example, willingly share your knowledge, and invest in the growth of colleagues without losing sight of your own contributions or the collaborative spirit that makes the team work.
You bring proven paralegal or compliance experience, strong critical thinking, and the organizational discipline to manage competing priorities without close supervision. You communicate clearly with both legal and business audiences, and you take ownership of your work from start to finish.
You also use AI tools critically in day-to-day work - validating machine-generated output against source authority, curating reliable reference knowledge, and refining prompts to get dependable results. You are ready to help encode and steward the team's regulated workflows as we move from exploring AI to integrating it responsibly into daily work. If you want to do meaningful legal support work as AI reshapes the profession, consider joining our team.

What Will You Do?

  • Develop and maintain relationships with attorneys, other legal and compliance professionals and internal business partners to facilitate effective teamwork, communication, and client focus.
  • Act as a Subject Matter Expert by navigating Travelers' internal BI systems and providing advice and guidance to business units and clients regarding internal business policies.
  • Lead projects by coordinating people and resources, laying out a timeline for completion, and managing workflow.
  • Develop procedures for client areas that include identifying, evaluating, and balancing client risks, as well as cost-effective strategies for attorneys and business partners.
  • Identify and implement ways to streamline practices, increase efficiencies, and reduce costs.
  • Review, monitor, and evaluate the team's work to ensure consistent compliance with internal policies and practices and provide training as needed.
  • Conduct complex legal research on broad topics and present relevant information to attorneys and compliance professionals.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor's Degree.
  • Paralegal Certificate.
  • Seven years working as a legal professional or related industry experience.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills as evidenced by proper use of grammar, spelling accuracy, vocabulary, and ability to convey complicated concepts and ideas.
  • Exceptional technological aptitude with the ability to work within and navigate multiple systems including the Microsoft Suite, Document Management systems (iManage), Case Management systems (CounselLink) and Case Law Databases (Westlaw and Oden).
  • Exceptional organization skills with the ability to manage priorities effectively and prepare presentations for business partners and senior leaders.
  • Excellent leadership skills with the ability to influence, coach and train others and coordinate projects.
  • Exceptional critical thinking skills with the ability to spot legal issues in documents, contracts, business meetings and research effectively.
  • Excellent ability to use Agile methodology when managing projects.
  • Team player with the ability to collaborate on projects with various business segments such as other Legal Units, Underwriting, Risk Control, Service Centers and Distribution.

What is a Must Have?

  • Associate's Degree or five years of experience as a paralegal, compliance professional or related industry experience.
