What is a senior network engineer?

Senior Network Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, and managing complex computer networks within organizations. They oversee network infrastructure, troubleshoot issues, ensure network security, and optimize performance. Typically, they lead network projects, mentor junior staff, and collaborate with other IT teams to support business operations. Their expertise covers a range of technologies, including routers, switches, firewalls, and cloud networking.

What does a senior network engineer do?

A senior network engineer builds and maintains data communication networks for a company or organization. As a senior network engineer, you have several years of industry experience and lead a team of junior network engineers and network administrators to ensure both the local area network (LAN) and wide area network (WAN) are functioning properly. Your job duties include installing software and hardware, creating a layout plan for cables, and troubleshooting and solving problems that arise with the networks for which you are responsible.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior network engineer, and why are they important?

To excel as a Senior Network Engineer, you need a deep understanding of network architecture, protocols, security, and typically a bachelor's degree in computer science or a related field. Expertise in configuring and troubleshooting routers, switches, firewalls, and experience with tools like Cisco IOS, Juniper, or cloud networking platforms, along with certifications such as CCNP or CCIE, are highly valued. Strong problem-solving abilities, communication skills, and leadership are crucial for designing solutions and collaborating with IT teams. These competencies ensure reliable, secure, and scalable network infrastructures that support critical business operations.

What are some common challenges faced by senior network engineers when managing large-scale network infrastructures?

Senior Network Engineers often encounter challenges such as integrating new technologies into legacy systems, ensuring network security across a growing number of devices, and maintaining high availability while performing upgrades or troubleshooting. Balancing the demands of multiple stakeholders—like IT, security, and business units—can also be complex. Staying updated with evolving protocols and proactively identifying potential performance bottlenecks are crucial parts of effectively managing large-scale environments.

What is the difference between Senior Network Engineer vs Network Administrator?

AspectSenior Network EngineerNetwork Administrator
CertificationsCCNP, CCIE, Cisco certificationsCCNA, CompTIA Network+
Work EnvironmentDesign, implement, and troubleshoot complex networksMaintain and support existing network infrastructure
ResponsibilitiesNetwork architecture, advanced troubleshooting, project leadershipNetwork setup, monitoring, routine maintenance

While both roles involve network management, a Senior Network Engineer focuses on designing and implementing complex network solutions, often leading projects. In contrast, a Network Administrator primarily maintains and supports existing networks, ensuring smooth daily operations.

Job description

Cirrascale Cloud Services provides high-performance cloud infrastructure purpose-built for deep learning, generative AI, and large-scale AI inference workloads. We specialize in dedicated GPU cloud solutions tailored to the unique needs of startups, research labs, and enterprise AI teams. Our mission is to accelerate AI innovation by combining powerful hardware with white-glove service and flexible, custom-built environments.

Position Summary

We are seeking a Sr. Network Engineer to join our Engineering team. This individual contributor role operates with high autonomy, owning network projects from conception through delivery. The role owns the design, operation, and optimization of Cirrascale's SD-WAN, multi-homed internet edge, and cloud interconnect infrastructure, ensuring SLA-backed connectivity across data centers, cloud, and customer environments. You will work with the VP of Engineering to align network initiatives with infrastructure and platform strategy. You will partner cross-functionally to deliver secure, scalable, and high-performance network systems, including the InfiniBand fabrics that support our AI and HPC workloads.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own and operate the company’s internet edge architecture, including ASN management, upstream provider relationships, peering strategy, and global routing policy.
  • Design, configure, and maintain SD-WAN, LAN, WAN, VPN, firewall, and switching/routing environments.
  • Deploy and support InfiniBand fabrics for GPU cluster infrastructure.
  • Implement network telemetry and BGP monitoring systems to proactively detect routing anomalies, traffic shifts, and DDoS conditions.
  • Monitor network performance and troubleshoot issues to ensure reliability and uptime.
  • Lead incident response for network edge events and author postmortems with actionable remediation plans.
  • Support the buildout of new infrastructure within our GPU cloud platform.
  • Collaborate with Engineering and Platform teams to align networking with infrastructure needs.
  • Manage network documentation including topologies, IP allocations, and configurations.
  • Evaluate and recommend new tools, technologies, and network optimizations.
  • Assist in data center migrations and bringups, hardware upgrades, and capacity planning.
  • Maintain compliance with internal and external security and performance standards.
Requirements
  • Designed, operated, and scaled resilient multi-homed internet edge architectures supporting >10Gbps sustained throughput, including routing policy design, peering strategy (IXPs), inbound/outbound traffic engineering, validated failover procedures to meet SLA-backed uptime targets, and advanced eBGP policy implementation (route filtering, community manipulation, local-pref/MED tuning, AS-path prepending).
  • Built high-availability edge designs utilizing redundant firewalls (active/passive or active/active), state synchronization, load balancing, and fast failure detection mechanisms (e.g., BFD).
  • Experience implementing DDoS mitigation strategies, RTBH, or integration with scrubbing providers is strongly preferred.
  • Experience designing and operating hybrid cloud interconnects and customer connectivity solutions including private interconnects, cross-connects, and IPsec/GRE tunnels.
  • 7+ years of experience in network engineering or related infrastructure roles.
  • Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, BGP, OSPF, ECMP, VLANs, and other Layer 2/3 technologies.
  • Hands-on experience with enterprise switches, routers, and firewalls (e.g., Cisco, Arista, SONiC, Fortinet).
  • Experience with network monitoring tools (e.g., Nagios, Zabbix, Prometheus/Grafana, etc.).
  • Demonstrated experience automating network configuration, validation, and change management using Ansible, Python, or similar tools in production environments.
  • Understanding of cloud and virtualization concepts (OpenStack, VMware, k8s, etc.).
  • Strong documentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to participate in an on-call rotation and occasional after-hours support.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated technical leadership as a senior engineer, including setting technical standards and driving network design projects end-to-end.
  • Certifications such as CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent experience.
  • Exposure to HPC, data center networking, SD-WAN and InfiniBand.
  • Experience in a fast-paced startup or cloud service provider environment.
Salary Range

The base salary range for the Sr. Network Engineer is $125,000 to $180,000. This pay range reflects the broad, minimum to maximum, pay range for this job for the location for which it has been posted. Compensation decisions are dependent on several factors including, but not limited to, an individual’s qualifications, location where the role is to be performed, internal equity, and alignment with market data.

Comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance, retirement plans, paid time off, and opportunities for professional development.
