Description

 About Coastal Engineering

Coastal Engineering is a specialized marine engineering & construction firm delivering complex, high-quality waterfront and underwater infrastructure projects throughout the East Coast. Our capabilities include piers, bulkheads, dams, bridges, dredging, underwater inspections, marine rehabilitation, and other critical marine structures.

As Coastal Engineering continues to expand, we are establishing a dedicated Marine Engineering Division to support our growing portfolio of engineering and marine construction projects. We are seeking an experienced marine engineer who combines technical expertise, project delivery experience, estimating capabilities, and leadership potential.

This position offers a unique opportunity to help build a marine engineering practice, while working directly with executive leadership. The successful candidate will have a defined growth path into Marine Engineering Division leadership.

Position Summary

The Senior Marine Project Engineer / Project Manager will be responsible for developing, estimating, managing, and delivering marine engineering projects throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions.

The ideal candidate possesses hands-on experience performing marine engineering work, conducting inspections and field investigations, developing estimates and proposals, and managing projects from pursuit through completion.

This is not a traditional design-only engineering role. We are seeking a professional who understands both marine engineering and marine construction and can help bridge the gap between design, estimating, and execution.

Requirements

 Responsibilities

Project Development & Estimating

  • Prepare engineering estimates, fee proposals, scopes of work, and technical submissions.
  • Support design-build pursuits and marine construction bids.
  • Develop project budgets, schedules, staffing plans, and resource requirements.
  • Participate in client presentations, proposal interviews, and business development activities.
  • Assist in identifying and pursuing new engineering opportunities.

Engineering & Technical Services

  • Lead engineering and technical efforts for waterfront and marine infrastructure projects.
  • Perform inspections, condition assessments, and field investigations.
  • Develop repair, rehabilitation, and replacement recommendations.
  • Prepare and review engineering calculations, reports, and design documents.
  • Coordinate permitting and regulatory requirements where applicable.

Project Management

  • Manage projects from award through completion.
  • Coordinate with field personnel, divers, contractors, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Monitor project budgets, schedules, and profitability.
  • Provide constructability reviews and means-and-methods support.
  • Ensure quality control and adherence to company delivery standards.

Division Growth & Leadership

  • Support the development of Coastal Engineering's Marine Engineering Division.
  • Assist in establishing engineering procedures, standards, and best practices.
  • Mentor junior engineering staff as the division grows.
  • Work closely with executive leadership on strategic planning and growth initiatives.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Structural, Coastal, Ocean, or Marine Engineering.
  • 8+ years of marine engineering, project management, and project delivery experience.
  • Experience preparing estimates, proposals, and scopes of work.
  • Experience managing engineering projects and client relationships.
  • Strong understanding of marine construction methods and constructability.
  • Ability to conduct site visits and field investigations.

Preferred

  • Professional Engineer (PE) License.
  • Experience with:
    • Bulkheads
    • Piers and wharves
    • Dams
    • Fender systems
    • Dolphins and mooring structures
    • Marine foundations
    • Bridge and waterfront infrastructure
    • Underwater inspection and rehabilitation projects
  • Experience working with:

    • NAVFAC
    • Port Authorities
    • State DOTs
    • Municipal waterfront agencies

What We Offer

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Bonuses and weekly pay structure.
  • Clear path toward Marine Engineering Division leadership.
  • Opportunity to build and shape a growing engineering practice.
  • Direct access to executive leadership and strategic decision-making.
  • Professional development opportunities within a highly specialized marine construction sector.
  • Collaborative, safety-driven work environment focused on innovation and long-term growth.

Benefits

  • 401(k)
  • Health insurance reimbursement plan
  • Paid time off
  • Cell phone reimbursement
  • Professional development assistance
  • Opportunities for advancement

Schedule

  • Primarily Monday through Friday during standard business hours.
  • Must be available as needed to support field operations, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional Saturdays.
  • Schedule may vary based on project demands, weather conditions, and critical construction activities.

Work Location & Requirements

  • Location: NY/NJ
  • Travel throughout the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region as required.
  • Ability to access active marine construction sites, vessels, and waterfront facilities.

Why Join Coastal Engineering?

Most engineering firms offer opportunities to manage projects.

Few offer the opportunity to help build and lead an entire Marine Engineering Division.

This role is designed for an ambitious marine engineering professional who wants to influence company growth, expand client relationships, help win work, and ultimately become a leader within one of the fastest-growing marine construction organizations on the East Coast.
