What is a senior intern?

A Senior Intern is typically an intern who has more experience or tenure compared to other interns, often taking on greater responsibilities within an organization. Senior Interns may mentor new interns, assist with project management, and contribute more significantly to team goals. While still in a learning position, they are expected to work more independently and may be preparing for a transition to a full-time role. The title can vary depending on the company's structure but generally reflects a higher level of trust and responsibility.

What do senior interns do?

As a Senior Intern, you can anticipate being given more complex projects and greater autonomy than entry-level interns. You may be expected to lead small teams of fellow interns, contribute to strategic discussions, and present findings or updates to management. Senior Interns often collaborate closely with full-time staff, gaining exposure to higher-level work processes and decision-making. This role serves as a bridge between internship and full-time employment, providing valuable experience that can enhance your career prospects.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a senior intern?

To thrive as a Senior Intern, you need a solid academic background in your field, strong organizational skills, and relevant internship or project experience. Familiarity with industry-specific software, productivity tools like Microsoft Office or Google Suite, and sometimes basic data analysis platforms is often expected. Proactive communication, adaptability, and the ability to quickly learn new tasks are soft skills that set top candidates apart. These competencies help Senior Interns contribute meaningfully to projects, adapt to workplace demands, and demonstrate readiness for full-time professional roles.

What is the difference between Senior Intern vs Intern?

AspectSenior Intern
Experience LevelTypically 1-3 years of related internship or entry-level experience
ResponsibilitiesMore advanced tasks, mentorship roles, project leadership
QualificationsOften pursuing or holding a bachelor's degree, some may have relevant certifications
Work EnvironmentSame as intern, often in corporate or organizational settings

In summary, a Senior Intern has more experience and responsibilities than a standard Intern, often taking on leadership roles and handling more complex tasks, while still being in an internship capacity.

Job description

Description:

Environmental Intern

Westwood Professional Services, Inc.

The Environmental Permitting Intern will join a multidisciplinary environmental services team supporting the siting and permitting of utility-scale wind, solar, and battery energy storage projects. Projects range from early-stage constraints mapping and desktop due diligence to complex federal and state permitting efforts for independent power producers, developers, and utility clients. This position offers a direct opportunity to apply environmental science and regulatory coursework to real-world renewable energy development.

As an Environmental Permitting Intern, the selected candidate will learn to navigate NEPA, state siting statutes, and local zoning and land use requirements in support of project approvals, and will assist Senior Permitting Specialists in the preparation of permit applications, agency correspondence, and environmental compliance documentation.

Requirements:

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist in the preparation of federal, state, and local permit applications for wind, solar, and battery storage projects.
  • Conduct desktop research and constraints analysis using GIS and publicly available regulatory databases.
  • Support the drafting of environmental documentation, including biological assessments, cultural resource reports, and environmental impact statements.
  • Help track permitting schedules, agency comments, and compliance deadlines across multiple active projects.
  • Coordinate with internal technical staff, including biologists, wetland scientists, and engineers, and external agencies to compile permit-supporting materials.
  • Travel to project sites as necessary to support field data collection and agency site visits.

Required Qualifications:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Environmental Policy, or a related field.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally with clients, agency representatives, and project team members.
  • Willingness to learn in a flexible, cross-disciplinary work environment.
  • Willingness to attend site visits and perform work in outdoor field conditions on occasion.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Preferred Qualifications:

The following qualifications are preferred but not required for consideration:

  • Relevant industry experience through coursework, research, or prior internships in environmental permitting, land use planning, or renewable energy development.
  • Experience with GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS) or regulatory research tools used in environmental due diligence and permitting.
