What is a senior infrastructure manager?

Senior Infrastructure Managers are experienced professionals responsible for overseeing an organization's IT infrastructure, including hardware, software, networks, and data centers. They lead teams to ensure systems are secure, reliable, and scalable, and they often manage budgets, projects, and vendor relationships. Their role involves strategic planning, implementing new technologies, and maintaining high availability of IT services to support business operations. Senior Infrastructure Managers typically collaborate with other IT leaders and align infrastructure initiatives with organizational goals.

Senior Infrastructure Managers often encounter challenges such as aligning infrastructure upgrades with evolving business needs, managing cross-functional teams with diverse skill sets, and ensuring minimal downtime during system migrations or updates. Balancing budget constraints while maintaining high performance and security standards is another frequent hurdle. Effective communication and collaboration with stakeholders across departments are essential to address these challenges and ensure the smooth delivery of complex IT projects.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior infrastructure manager?

To thrive as a Senior Infrastructure Manager, you need expertise in IT infrastructure management, network architecture, and systems administration, often supported by a bachelor’s degree in computer science or related field. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), virtualization technologies, ITIL frameworks, and relevant certifications like PMP or Cisco are typically required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills are crucial for ensuring reliable, scalable, and secure infrastructure that supports organizational goals.

Job description

Job summary

We are looking for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to design, build, and maintain the enterprise infrastructure that runs across our multi-region datacenter footprint. In this role, you will own our infrastructure-as-code automation, virtualization platforms, and storage systems, balancing hands-on physical infrastructure with modern DevOps practices. Most of your work is remote, with scheduled in-office days for collaboration and hardware integration testing.

What you will do

Key Responsibilities

  • Infrastructure Automation: Design and maintain IaC solutions using Terraform, Ansible, or SaltStack for configuration management and deployment standardization across 5+ datacenters.
  • Hypervisor Management: Administer vCenter environments and Nutanix AHV clusters; optimize resource allocation, performance tuning, and high-availability configurations.
  • Storage Engineering: Manage the Nutanix storage fabric, monitoring, and capacity planning; optimize IOPS, latency, and replication strategies.
  • Datacenter Operations: Lead hardware procurement, specification, and installation during refresh cycles; maintain asset inventory and power/cooling optimization.
  • Monitoring & Observability: Build Splunk dashboards, field extractors, and alerting rules for infrastructure metrics; troubleshoot performance issues through log analysis.
  • CI/CD Integration: Partner with development teams on GitHub-based infrastructure repositories; implement automated testing and rollback procedures for infrastructure changes.
  • Compliance & Security: Implement hardening standards and vulnerability remediation (CVE patching through patching pipelines), and uphold security best practices across all systems.
  • On-Call Rotation: Share in the team on-call rotation, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

What you will have

Required Skills & Experience

  • 5+ years of hands-on infrastructure engineering (hypervisors, storage, networking).
  • 3+ years of IaC with Terraform, Ansible, or CloudFormation.
  • Deep expertise in VMware vSphere (vCenter administration, ESXi tuning) and Nutanix AHV (deployment, cluster management).
  • NetApp storage administration (data protection, replication, capacity management).
  • Splunk proficiency: dashboard development, field extraction, SPL optimization, and alerting.
  • GitHub workflow: branching strategies, pull requests, and CI/CD pipeline integration.
  • Linux/Windows system administration and troubleshooting.
  • Physical infrastructure: comfortable with hardware installation, cabling, and IPMI/iLO management.
  • Able to travel to our datacenters for deployments, maintenance, and hardware refresh cycles - usually quarterly, and sometimes on shorter notice as needs come up.

Nice to have

Preferred Qualifications

  • Hands-on Python scripting for infrastructure automation (config.json-driven patterns).
  • Experience with vulnerability remediation and patching workflows (CVE tracking, Tanium).
  • Kubernetes or container orchestration knowledge.
  • Enterprise SAN/NAS background.
  • Familiarity with cloud migration patterns (VMware-to-Nutanix cold migrations).
  • Advanced Splunk certifications (Admin, Advanced Admin).
  • VMware certifications (VCP, VCAP).
  • Cloud experience (AWS, Azure).

Work Environment

  • 2 days/week on-site in our Lehi office for collaborative planning, hardware testing, and team meetings
  • 3 days/week remote for coding, monitoring, documentation, and async collaboration
  • Travel to our datacenters (2-5 days per trip) for hardware installations and deployments - typically quarterly, with occasional as-needed visits

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.
  • Retirement savings programs with company matching (401(k) or RRSP).
  • Generous paid time off, including holidays, and vacation.
  • Paid parental leave and family support benefits.
  • Life and disability coverage.
  • Flexible spending and health savings options (where applicable).
  • Health and wellness support, including gym reimbursement and wellness programs.
  • Employee Assistance Program with 24/7confidential support for employees and families.
  • Education assistance and professional development opportunities.
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning and continuous learning resources.
  • Employee referral bonus program and additional company perks and discounts.
  • Internal rewards and recognition platform (Motivosity) to celebrate and acknowledge project wins, milestone achievements, and the outstanding contributions of our colleagues.
  • Business travel insurance and global employee support programs.
