What is a senior infrastructure engineer?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers are experienced IT professionals responsible for designing, implementing, maintaining, and optimizing an organization’s core technology infrastructure. This includes servers, networks, cloud environments, and related systems that support business operations. They often lead projects, troubleshoot complex issues, and ensure the reliability, security, and scalability of the infrastructure. In addition to technical expertise, they may mentor junior engineers and collaborate with other departments to align technology with business goals.

What is the difference between Senior Infrastructure Engineer vs Network Engineer?

AspectSenior Infrastructure EngineerNetwork Engineer

Work EnvironmentDesigning, implementing, and maintaining IT infrastructure, servers, cloud servicesConfiguring, managing, and troubleshooting network hardware and connectivity
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, data centers, large enterprisesTelecommunications, IT service providers, corporate networks

While both roles require networking knowledge and certifications, Senior Infrastructure Engineers focus on overall infrastructure design and cloud integration, whereas Network Engineers specialize in network hardware and connectivity. The Senior Infrastructure Engineer role is broader, often overseeing multiple systems, while Network Engineers concentrate on network-specific tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior infrastructure engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you need deep expertise in network architecture, server management, cloud platforms, and a relevant degree or certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Certified: Azure Administrator. Proficiency with infrastructure-as-code tools (e.g., Terraform, Ansible), virtualization platforms, and monitoring systems is typical in this role. Strong problem-solving skills, leadership, and effective communication help you manage complex projects and collaborate across teams. These skills ensure reliable, secure, and scalable IT environments that support organizational goals.

What are some common challenges faced by senior infrastructure engineers when supporting large-scale systems?

Senior Infrastructure Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring high availability and reliability of systems, managing complex migrations, and optimizing performance under heavy workloads. Coordinating with development and security teams is essential to implement infrastructure changes without disrupting services. Additionally, staying ahead of evolving technologies and automating routine tasks can be demanding but crucial for efficiency and scalability. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong technical expertise, proactive problem-solving, and effective cross-team communication.

Job description

Position Summary
Stimulus Technologies is seeking an experienced Network Infrastructure Architect to lead the design, standardization, and continued expansion of our multi-state Internet service provider network.
This senior technical and supervisory position is responsible for developing network architecture, establishing engineering standards, designing infrastructure for major fiber deployments, and leading complex network projects. The Network Infrastructure Architect will supervise and mentor our Network Administrators, ensuring that network changes and regional operations follow established standards.
Our network includes fiber, fixed wireless, cable, carrier transport, tower infrastructure, and core routing systems across multiple states. The ideal candidate combines advanced ISP network engineering experience with the ability to translate growth plans into scalable, resilient, and financially sound network designs.
This position is based in Las Vegas and requires regular in-office work, field visits, and travel to multi-state network locations.
What Success Looks Like
  • Develop and maintain a scalable, resilient architecture for Stimulus Technologies' ISP networks.
  • Design and strategize network layouts for new fiber deployments, network expansions, and acquired systems.
  • Establish technical standards for core, distribution, access, transport, and customer-edge networks.
  • Lead major infrastructure projects from initial design through implementation and operational handoff.
  • Supervise, mentor, and establish priorities for Network Administrators.
  • Improve network reliability, redundancy, capacity, and operating efficiency.
  • Ensure regional networks follow consistent configurations, documentation, security, and monitoring standards.
  • Provide senior escalation support for complex outages and performance issues.
  • Identify the root causes of recurring incidents and implement permanent corrective actions.
  • Support technical due diligence and network integration associated with acquisitions and new markets.
  • Develop network capacity plans based on customer growth, bandwidth utilization, and future service requirements.
  • Evaluate equipment, software, carriers, and technology vendors.
  • Maintain accurate network diagrams, design documentation, IP address plans, standards, and change records.
  • Collaborate with construction, operations, field services, customer service, finance, and executive leadership.
  • Prepare technical plans, project requirements, budgets, and recommendations for leadership.
  • Participate in an after-hours escalation rotation for critical network incidents.

Required Skills and Experience
  • At least 10 years of progressive networking experience.
  • Significant senior-level engineering or architecture experience within an ISP, telecommunications carrier, or comparable service-provider environment.
  • Advanced knowledge of BGP, OSPF, MPLS, VLANs, IPv4, IPv6, QoS, multicast, network security, and high-availability design.
  • Experience designing core, distribution, access, and transport networks.
  • Experience developing network strategies and layouts for large fiber deployments.
  • Understanding of fiber route planning, backbone design, aggregation, redundancy, capacity planning, and service-area architecture.
  • Experience with fixed-wireless and licensed or unlicensed wireless infrastructure.
  • Demonstrated success leading major network deployments or migrations.
  • Experience supervising, mentoring, or providing technical direction to network engineering personnel.
  • Ability to analyze complex problems, make sound decisions, and clearly communicate recommendations.
  • Strong project-management and documentation skills.
  • Ability to balance technical performance, scalability, deployment schedules, and cost.
  • Availability for after-hours escalations and emergency outages.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to multi-state network locations.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with Juniper, Nokia, Cisco, Arista, Calix, or similar service-provider platforms.
  • Experience with network-monitoring, mapping, configuration-management, and IP-address-management systems.
  • Experience integrating newly acquired or previously independent networks.
  • Experience with outside-plant fiber design, GIS platforms, optical transport, GPON/XGS-PON, and carrier interconnection.
  • Relevant certifications from Juniper, Cisco, Nokia, CompTIA, or comparable organizations.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, information systems, engineering, telecommunications, or a related field. Equivalent experience will be considered.

Physical and Travel Requirements
  • Ability to travel throughout Stimulus Technologies' multi-state network footprint.
  • Ability to access data centers, equipment shelters, rooftops, towers, construction areas, and other network facilities.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfort working around active telecommunications and outside-plant environments.
