Summary :
Provides advanced legal and operational support to attorneys within the Office of General Counsel on a broad range of healthcare legal, regulatory, compliance, governance, transactional, and operational matters. Working with a high degree of autonomy and independent judgment, this role manages complex legal projects, conducts legal and regulatory research, analyzes healthcare laws and contractual requirements, drafts and reviews legal documents, and coordinates legal workflows across the health system.
Serving as a key resource to attorneys, operational leaders, physicians, and affiliated organizations, the Senior Healthcare Paralegal supports healthcare contracting, academic and clinical partnerships, including Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) relationships, corporate governance activities, regulatory compliance initiatives, litigation support, and strategic business transactions. The role collaborates with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate efficient legal processes, mitigate organizational risk, ensure regulatory compliance, and support the health system's strategic and operational objectives.
Job Description:
This position provides administrative and legal support to a team of 3-4 attoneys specializing in healthcare law. Responsibilities include assisting with healthcare compliance matters, supporting medical staff and clinic operations on legal and regulatory questions, and conducting legal and regulatory research. The role also involves drafting and managing contracts, professional services agreements, and clinical affiliation and partnership agreements, while helping ensure accurate documentation and efficient coordination across legal and operational teams.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:
  • Provides high-level legal and operational support to attorneys within the Office of General Counsel on a broad range of healthcare legal, regulatory, compliance, governance, transactional, and operational matters.
  • Conducts legal and regulatory research and analysis related to federal and state healthcare laws, regulations, accreditation standards, and healthcare industry requirements.
  • Manages the intake, review, drafting, negotiation, execution, and ongoing administration of healthcare-related contracts and legal documents under attorney supervision.
  • Serves as a primary legal operations resource for clinical, academic, and Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) contracting processes, coordinating contract review, approvals, execution, and ongoing administration.
  • Provides support for strategic transactions, business arrangements, affiliations, partnerships, provider relationships, and other healthcare system initiatives.
  • Assists with corporate governance activities, including resolutions, organizational records, and related documentation.
  • Supports regulatory compliance activities, including licensing, accreditation, governmental filings, audits, investigations, and responses to regulatory inquiries.
  • Assists with litigation and claims management, including legal hold administration, document collection, discovery coordination, matter tracking, and collaboration with outside counsel.
  • Prepares and manages complex legal documents, correspondence, reports, presentations, summaries, educational materials, and special projects while exercising sound judgment and maintaining confidentiality in sensitive legal and business matters.
  • Provides contract paralegal support to the department, and other attorneys, as assigned.
  • Prepares varied legal documents, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Associate's degree in paralegal studies, or related field or paralegal certification required.
  • Minimum of 7 years demonstrated paralegal experience required, 10 years preferred. Healthcare experience also preferred.
  • Strong analytical skills and effective written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to proactively interact with all levels of staff and/or others while achieving positive outcomes required.
  • Possesses information, skill and understanding of the work to be performed required.
  • Ability to work both closely with a team and independently and to exercise flexibility and be a self-starter required.
  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Outlook, Word, and Excel required.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Ability to move freely (standing, stooping, walking, bending, pushing, and pulling) and lift up to a maximum of twenty-five (25) pounds without assistance
  • Job classification is not exposed to blood borne pathogens (blood or bodily fluids) while performing job duties
