What is the difference between Senior Gnss Engineer vs GNSS Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Gnss EngineerGNSS Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, Geomatics, or related; certifications like GPS/GNSS certificationsBachelor's or Master's in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering; similar certifications may apply
Work EnvironmentDesigning, testing, and deploying GNSS hardware and systems in R&D or engineering teamsDeveloping GNSS software applications, algorithms, and firmware in software development teams
Employer & Industry UsageTelecommunications, aerospace, defense, and navigation companiesSoftware firms, tech companies, and research institutions working on GNSS solutions

The main difference is that a Senior Gnss Engineer focuses on hardware, system integration, and field testing, while a GNSS Software Engineer specializes in developing software algorithms and applications. Both roles require strong technical skills and industry knowledge, but their daily tasks and focus areas differ.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior GNSS Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior GNSS Engineer, you need a deep understanding of satellite navigation systems, signal processing, and positioning algorithms, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering or a related field. Proficiency with GNSS simulation tools, MATLAB, C/C++, and experience with hardware testing equipment are commonly required, along with relevant certifications in GNSS technologies. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving, and effective communication skills help drive innovation and teamwork in complex technical projects. These abilities are crucial for designing accurate GNSS solutions and ensuring system reliability in critical applications.

What are Senior GNSS Engineers?

Senior GNSS Engineers are experienced professionals who specialize in the design, development, and maintenance of Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) technologies, such as GPS, Galileo, and GLONASS. They work on advanced positioning, navigation, and timing solutions for a variety of industries, including aerospace, automotive, and telecommunications. In addition to technical expertise, Senior GNSS Engineers often lead teams, manage complex projects, and contribute to the integration of GNSS systems into larger platforms. Their work ensures high accuracy and reliability in applications that depend on satellite-based navigation.

What are some common challenges Senior GNSS Engineers face when integrating GNSS solutions with other navigation systems?

Senior GNSS Engineers often encounter challenges when integrating GNSS solutions with inertial navigation or other sensor systems, such as managing signal interference, ensuring seamless data fusion, and maintaining high accuracy in environments with limited satellite visibility. Effective collaboration with software, firmware, and hardware teams is essential to address these issues. Being proactive in troubleshooting, testing under various real-world scenarios, and staying updated on the latest GNSS technologies can help overcome these integration challenges.

Job description

Xona is the navigational intelligence company bringing real-time, centimeter-level certainty to any device, anywhere on Earth.
With Pulsar - the world's most advanced PNT satellite infrastructure in Low Earth Orbit - Xona will offer a future-proof, backwards-compatible global positioning system optimized for absolute precision, superior power, and robust protection.
We're seeking a GNSS Receiver Engineer to join our Navigation Software team, where you'll work at the intersection of signal design and receiver implementation. You'll be instrumental in developing and validating the receiver architectures that process our novel LEO PNT signals from acquisition and tracking through measurement generation.
This role sits at the heart of our system: you'll help shape how our signal-in-space design translates into real receiver performance, working directly with our Interface Control Documents (ICD) to ensure our modulation schemes, navigation message formats, and signal structures are implementable and optimized for precision.
What You'll Do
  • Developing and optimizing acquisition and tracking algorithms for our LEO PNT signals
  • Implementing and testing receiver signal processing chains using our GNSS-SDR-based verification platform
  • Analyzing signal designs and data modulation schemes, evaluating tradeoffs between receiver complexity and performance
  • Generating and validating pseudorange and carrier phase measurements from signals in space
  • Contributing to ICD development, ensuring signal specifications are grounded in practical receiver implementation
  • Characterizing receiver performance through simulation and live signal testing with software-defined radio (SDR) hardware

Required Qualifications
  • MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related field
  • 3+ years of experience with GNSS receiver development or signal processing
  • Strong C++ programming skills with experience in real-time or embedded signal processing
  • Hands-on experience with software-defined radio platforms (GNSS-SDR, GNU Radio, or similar)
  • Deep understanding of GNSS signal structures: spreading codes, modulation schemes, correlation, and tracking loops
  • Experience with carrier and code tracking loop design (DLL, PLL, FLL)
  • Familiarity with measurement generation-pseudorange, carrier phase, Doppler

Desired Qualifications
  • Experience with LEO satellite signals or high-Doppler tracking scenarios
  • Familiarity with navigation message decoding and frame synchronization
  • Exposure to signal authentication or advanced modulation schemes (BOC, CSK, etc.)
  • Experience translating ICDs into receiver implementations

For U.S. Roles: To comply with U.S. Government space technology export regulations, applicant must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident of the United States (i.e. Green Card holder), or other protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
For U.K. Roles: To comply with U.K. regulations, this role requires Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS) checks, and successful candidates must be eligible to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC).
For Canada Roles: Successful candidates must obtain and hold a security clearance at the reliability status level, and pass security assessment for the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP) and ITAR.
