What is a senior firmware engineer?

Senior Firmware Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that enables hardware devices to function correctly. They typically work with embedded systems, programming microcontrollers or processors using languages like C or C++. In addition to writing and debugging code, they often lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate closely with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration and optimal device performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior firmware engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Firmware Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded systems, strong coding skills in C/C++ or similar languages, and a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart. These competencies ensure robust firmware development, seamless hardware-software integration, and successful collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

What are the most common challenges faced by senior firmware engineers when collaborating with hardware teams?

Senior Firmware Engineers often work closely with hardware teams to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components. One common challenge is managing communication gaps due to differing technical languages and priorities between software and hardware disciplines. Additionally, hardware prototypes may evolve rapidly, requiring firmware engineers to adapt code frequently, troubleshoot unexpected behavior, and adjust to shifting specifications. Building strong cross-functional relationships and maintaining clear, frequent communication helps address these challenges and ensures project success.

How much money does a senior firmware engineer make?

A senior firmware engineer typically earns between $100,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often work with embedded systems, real-time operating systems, and programming languages like C and C++.

What does a senior firmware engineer do?

A senior firmware engineer designs, develops, and tests low-level software that controls hardware devices. They often work with embedded systems, use programming languages like C or C++, and collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure proper functionality and performance. This role typically requires strong problem-solving skills and experience with debugging tools and real-time operating systems.

Job description

NVIDIA's invention of the GPU fueled the PC gaming market. The company's groundbreaking work in accelerated computing-a supercharged form of computing at the intersection of computer graphics, high performance computing and AI-is reshaping industries, such as transportation, healthcare and manufacturing, and fueling the growth of others. In 2020, NVIDIA acquired Mellanox, a leading supplier of end-to-end Ethernet and InfiniBand intelligent interconnect solutions and services for servers, storage, and hyper-converged infrastructure.

Mellanox increase data center efficiency by providing the highest throughput and lowest latency, delivering data faster to applications and unlocking system performance. We are looking for an excellent Software Engineer to join the NIC Firmware team. The Firmware team develops innovative networking features for cloud, HPC and storage.

We drive the data growth of the world's biggest companies. With many dedicated engineers around the globe, the work environment is multifaceted, significant and fast paced. What you will be doing: Work closely with the architecture and different software design teams.

Implement new features in the core of Mellanox NIC firmware. Develop verification tests for advanced features in a highly complex and sophisticated Firmware testing environment. Gain a deep understanding of system debug, networking technology and stacks, as well as the HW/FW/SW relationship.

You will learn how a big software project is operated, maintained, qualified and released, and how Hardware and Firmware are developed. What we need to see: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience in the field. 5+ years of professional software development experience.

Strong proficiency in C and C++. Solid understanding of networking protocols. Experience with PCIe and virtualization technologies.

Excellent grasp of data structures and algorithms fundamentals. Scripting experience with Python and/or Bash. Strong analytical, debugging, and problemsolving skills.

Selfmotivated, independent, and a great teammate with excellent interpersonal skills. Ways to stand out from the crowd: Deep familiarity with RDMA stacks (RoCE, InfiniBand) and lowlatency networking. Experience in highperformance or largescale compute environments.

Proven experience with distributed systems and scalability challenges. With competitive salaries and a generous benefits package, NVIDIA is widely considered to be one of the technology world's most desirable employers. We have some of the most forward-thinking and hardworking people in the world working for us and, due to unprecedented growth, our exclusive engineering teams are rapidly growing.

If you're a creative and autonomous engineer with a real passion for technology, we want to hear from you. Your base salary will be determined based on your location, experience, and the pay of employees in similar positions. The base salary range is 152,000 USD - 241,500 USD for Level 3, and 184,000 USD - 287,500 USD for Level 4.

You will also be eligible for equity and benefits. Applications for this job will be accepted at least until September 8, 2026. This posting is for an existing vacancy.
