What is a senior firmware engineer?

Senior Firmware Engineers are experienced professionals who design, develop, and maintain the low-level software (firmware) that enables hardware devices to function correctly. They typically work with embedded systems, programming microcontrollers or processors using languages like C or C++. In addition to writing and debugging code, they often lead projects, mentor junior engineers, and collaborate closely with hardware and software teams to ensure seamless integration and optimal device performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior firmware engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Firmware Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded systems, strong coding skills in C/C++ or similar languages, and a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools, version control systems like Git, and real-time operating systems (RTOS) is typically required, along with relevant certifications such as Certified Embedded Systems Engineer. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills set top performers apart. These competencies ensure robust firmware development, seamless hardware-software integration, and successful collaboration within multidisciplinary teams.

What are the most common challenges faced by senior firmware engineers when collaborating with hardware teams?

Senior Firmware Engineers often work closely with hardware teams to ensure seamless integration of software and hardware components. One common challenge is managing communication gaps due to differing technical languages and priorities between software and hardware disciplines. Additionally, hardware prototypes may evolve rapidly, requiring firmware engineers to adapt code frequently, troubleshoot unexpected behavior, and adjust to shifting specifications. Building strong cross-functional relationships and maintaining clear, frequent communication helps address these challenges and ensures project success.

How much money does a senior firmware engineer make?

A senior firmware engineer typically earns between $100,000 and $150,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. They often work with embedded systems, real-time operating systems, and programming languages like C and C++.

What does a senior firmware engineer do?

A senior firmware engineer designs, develops, and tests low-level software that controls hardware devices. They often work with embedded systems, use programming languages like C or C++, and collaborate with hardware engineers to ensure proper functionality and performance. This role typically requires strong problem-solving skills and experience with debugging tools and real-time operating systems.

Senior Test & Integration Engineer

Full Time Technical Gilbert, AZ, US

Senior Test & Integration Engineer

Position Summary

Advanced Technology Systems Company (ATSC) in Gilbert, AZ is seeking a Senior Test & Integration Engineer to architect and lead our new fixture‑based test program for electronic components and sub‑assemblies — cameras, LiDARs, radars, controllers, and related sensor hardware. This engineer will study how these systems actually communicate and behave once installed — power sequencing, communication buses, command/response behavior, firmware and configuration state — and translate that understanding into purpose‑built test fixtures, combining custom and off‑the‑shelf hardware, cabling, and software, that can validate a component as if it were already part of a live system. This is a hands‑on technical leadership role: you will set the technical direction, build the first fixtures yourself, and lead two Manufacturing Engineers in scaling the program.

Key Responsibilities

  • System & Protocol Reverse Engineering — Analyze existing electronic assemblies (radars, LiDARs, cameras, controllers) to understand their power requirements, communication protocols, command/response structure, and firmware behavior when no complete documentation exists.
  • Test Fixture Architecture — Design end-to-end bench test fixtures — hardware, cabling/harnessing, and control software — that emulate the system‑level environment a component would see once fully integrated, so it can be validated stand‑alone with confidence.
  • Build vs. Buy Decisions — Determine which fixture elements to design and build in-house versus source commercially, balancing cost, schedule, and fidelity to the real operating environment.
  • Software & Automation Development — Develop or direct the development of the software layer that drives each fixture — automated test sequencing, data capture, and pass/fail (and on) determination.
  • Technical Leadership — Lead and mentor two Manufacturing Engineers, translating direction from the Director of Operations into a prioritized fixture build plan, and reviewing their fixture and procedure designs for technical soundness.
  • Process Ownership — Own the transition of component verification from ad‑hoc, downstream testing (IRT/ATP/FAI) to structured, front‑loaded bench verification, driving a substantial reduction in total test hours and touch time.
  • Data & Traceability — Ensure every test produces a clear pass/fail result plus supporting data (logs, measurements, configuration records) that is traceable to a specific serialized unit.
  • Program Scalability — Build the fixture library and documentation so that new component types and future programs can be onboarded quickly using reusable infrastructure.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related field, or equivalent hands‑on experience.
  • Demonstrated experience reverse‑engineering electronic hardware and embedded/firmware behavior on complex systems (sensors, avionics, radar/LiDAR/camera systems, or similar) without complete OEM documentation.
  • Strong background in electronics test — communication buses (e.g., CAN, Ethernet, SPI/I2C, RS‑422/485, or similar), power systems, and signal/continuity verification.
  • Proven experience designing test fixtures or bench setups from the ground up, including cable/harness design and hardware selection.
  • Software development experience for test automation and instrument/DUT control (e.g., Python, LabVIEW, or comparable).
  • Experience leading or mentoring other engineers on a technical program.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience testing or integrating sensor payloads (radar, LiDAR, camera/vision systems) in a defense, aerospace, or autonomy environment.
  • Familiarity with IRT, ATP, and FAI test and acceptance processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Experience with andon‑style pass/fail reporting systems or automated test data logging.
  • Prior experience standing up a test and integration function from scratch.

What Success Looks Like

Components arrive on the build floor as known‑good, configured, serialized units. Downstream integration testing shrinks dramatically because verification already happened on the bench, and the two‑person Manufacturing Engineering team is executing a shared fixture roadmap under this engineer's technical direction.

ATSC is committed to creating a diverse environment and is proud to be an Equal Opportunity Employer. We invite resumes from all interested parties including women, minorities, veterans, and persons with disabilities.

Advanced Technology Systems Company is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
