Overview
McGuireWoods has an opportunity for a detail-oriented analyst to join its Finance team as a Senior Financial Analyst in our Richmond office. This role will support multiple legal departments by developing comprehensive financial reporting and analytical frameworks to drive strategic decision-making across the firm. The Senior Financial Analyst serves as the primary financial resource to provide interpretive guidance on key metrics, variance analyses, and profitability insights to Department Chairs, partners, and lawyers, while collaborating across departmental and geographic lines to deliver client/matter pricing models, engagement analyses, and revenue optimization presentations that support the firm's growth objectives.

Responsibilities
  • Acts as the primary source of consultative financial analyses for the Department Chairs. Provide comprehensive analysis with identification of trends, root causes, linkage to broader business context and recommendations for possible course corrections. Prepare Department Chairs to present their department's quarterly financial performance to senior firm management; the Senior Financial Analyst participates in the quarterly financial performance meetings.
  • Prepare client/matter pricing analyses. This includes consulting with lawyers on ways to improve the financial performance of current and proposed arrangements. Help develop Alternative Fee Arrangements (AFAs) and monitor progress against project budgets and profitability targets.
  • Perform lateral hiring analyses for new lawyers or groups that join the firm. This includes providing advice on determining standard billing rates, billable hours targets and compensation and bonus structures.
  • Help review the monthly/quarterly/annual reports prepared by Associate Financial Analysts. Will also distribute reports to the intended recipients once finalized.
  • Prepare periodic analyses and written summaries of multiple key firm clients' financial performance. The analyses will be shared with responsible partners, Department Chairs and senior firm management.
  • Calculate annual bonuses for lawyers with incentive bonus agreements and monitor the agreements for any other mid-year financial calculations.
  • Assist with firm annual budgeting as needed, including calculating estimated incentive bonuses.
  • Work with all administrative departments within the firm to ensure our lawyer and firm management needs are met.
  • Simultaneously work on multiple assignments and projects.
  • Maintain timely and open communication of assignments with the Manager, Financial Analysis.

Qualifications
  • Requires a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Accounting or similar business discipline.
  • Five plus years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills required, along with proficiency in PowerBI.
  • Experience with Elite 3E and Xcelerate/Advanced Financial Solutions, and programming with SQL or Python is a plus.
  • Ability to prioritize workload and adapt to changing conditions.
  • Critical thinking with superior ability to analyze and conclude.
  • Confidential handling of sensitive information required.
  • Proven ability to communicate and present complex ideas and concepts across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with patience, diplomacy, and a high stress tolerance.
