As of Aug 19, 2026, the average yearly pay for senior embedded software engineer in Wisconsin is $146,127.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $125,200.00 and $164,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is a senior embedded software engineer?

A Senior Embedded Software Engineer is an experienced professional who designs, develops, tests, and maintains software that runs on embedded systems—specialized computing devices that are not traditional computers, such as automotive control systems, medical devices, or consumer electronics. They often work closely with hardware engineers to ensure software integrates seamlessly with hardware components. Senior engineers typically lead projects, mentor junior staff, and contribute to system architecture and design decisions. Their expertise includes programming languages like C or C++, real-time operating systems, and debugging tools specialized for embedded environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior embedded software engineer?

To thrive as a Senior Embedded Software Engineer, you need deep expertise in embedded C/C++ programming, real-time operating systems (RTOS), and a strong background in computer engineering or a related field. Familiarity with hardware debugging tools (such as oscilloscopes and logic analyzers), version control systems (like Git), and relevant certifications (e.g., ARM Accredited Engineer) is typically required. Exceptional problem-solving, communication, and project leadership skills help you collaborate effectively and mentor junior engineers. These competencies ensure the creation of robust, efficient, and reliable embedded systems critical for product success.

What are some common challenges senior embedded software engineers face when integrating software with new hardware platforms?

Senior Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as ensuring software compatibility with diverse hardware architectures, optimizing for limited memory or processing power, and debugging hardware-software interactions. These engineers must frequently collaborate with hardware teams to resolve timing issues, manage device drivers, and ensure reliable system performance. Successfully navigating these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a deep understanding of both hardware constraints and software design.

What is the difference between Senior Embedded Software Engineer vs Embedded Software Engineer?

AspectSenior Embedded Software EngineerEmbedded Software Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's/Master's in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field; experience in embedded systemsBachelor's degree in relevant field; entry-level to mid-level experience
Work EnvironmentDesigning, developing, testing embedded systems for hardware productsDeveloping firmware and software for embedded devices, often under supervision
Employer & Industry UsageTech companies, automotive, aerospace, consumer electronicsSimilar industries, often as part of product development teams

The main difference between a Senior Embedded Software Engineer and an Embedded Software Engineer lies in experience and responsibility. Senior engineers typically have more expertise, lead projects, and mentor junior staff, while embedded software engineers focus on developing and testing embedded code. Both roles require similar technical skills and industry knowledge, but senior roles involve greater leadership and strategic input.

Job description

Job Description Summary

Join an exciting software development team building next-generation embedded platforms for medical devices used in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Labor & Delivery environments. As a Software Engineer, you will help establish the low-level software foundation that enables application, algorithm, connectivity, and feature teams to build efficiently on a reliable, embedded platform.

About Us

The Maternal Infant Care team is developing the future of medical technology for Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Labor & Delivery environments. Our mission is to help send mothers and infants home healthy by building safe, reliable, and connected medical devices that support critical clinical care.

Job Description Roles and Responsibilities

Own and develop low-level embedded software and reusable platform capabilities for next-generation medical devices, including operating system configuration, board support packages, device drivers, boot flows, hardware abstraction layers, and shared software infrastructure. Serve as a platform enabler by creating clean, maintainable foundations that allow application, algorithm, connectivity, and feature teams to develop efficiently within a shared code base. Collaborate with software architects, electrical engineers, systems engineers, quality, program, and platform teams to translate system architecture and product requirements into well-designed embedded software components. Support hardware-software integration, board bring-up, debugging, and performance optimization across microprocessor, microcontroller, sensor, and connected-device environments. Design and implement software aligned with security, reliability, performance, scalability, maintainability, and medical device design-control expectations. Participate in technical design reviews, code reviews, integration reviews, risk-based engineering discussions, static analysis, unit testing, and disciplined issue resolution to deliver integrated software products with uncompromised quality. Work in a fast-paced AI infused Agile/Scrum environment while researching, evaluating, and applying new tools, technologies, automation approaches, and AI-assisted development practices to improve engineering productivity and software quality.

Qualifications & Essential Skills

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline and a minimum of 2 years of work experience as a software engineer in a product development team. Experience developing embedded software using C, C++, Python, or similar languages. Experience with embedded Linux, Unix/Linux programming, operating system concepts, STLinux or similar embedded Linux distributions, RTOS development, and low-level platform development. Experience with microcontrollers, microprocessors, board-level interfaces, real-time constraints, scheduling, timing behavior, resource management, deterministic system performance, and hardware-software integration. Strong understanding of object-oriented design, design patterns, algorithms, data structures, and maintainable software architecture. Ability to work across disciplines and communicate technical decisions clearly to software, electrical, systems, quality, and program stakeholders. Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required. We will not sponsor individuals for employment visas, now or in the future, for this job opening.

Desired Skills

Technical Experience with board bring-up, bootloaders, kernel configuration, device trees, device drivers, hardware abstraction layers, embedded platform debug, and hardware debug tools such as oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, protocol analyzers, JTAG/SWD debuggers, or similar equipment. Ability to read schematics and collaborate with electrical engineering teams to debug hardware-software interactions across electronics, circuits, sensors, signals, and common embedded communication interfaces. Awareness of embedded cybersecurity principles, including secure boot, encryption, authentication, vulnerability mitigation, device hardening, software update integrity, and secure development practices. Experience analyzing software performance, memory usage, timing behavior, startup behavior, and system-level reliability in constrained embedded environments. Experience developing software compliant with IEC/ISO 62304 Software Development Lifecycle expectations, medical device software practices, safety-critical systems, or other regulated product development environments. Experience using AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity, code comprehension, test generation, documentation, debugging, or workflow automation while maintaining appropriate engineering review and quality controls. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, including the ability to break down ambiguous technical problems, document problem statements, estimate implementation and test effort, create reusable solutions, and drive issues to closure through structured engineering execution.
