Embedded Software Engineer Remote information

What is an embedded software engineer remote?

An Embedded Software Engineer Remote job involves designing, developing, and testing software that runs on embedded systems, such as microcontrollers or IoT devices, while working remotely. These engineers write low-level code, optimize performance, and ensure seamless hardware-software integration. They use programming languages like C, C++, or Python and collaborate with teams through virtual communication tools. Remote roles require strong self-discipline, effective communication, and the ability to troubleshoot issues independently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an embedded software engineer remote?

To thrive as an Embedded Software Engineer Remote, you need strong programming skills in C/C++, a solid understanding of embedded systems architecture, and often a degree in computer engineering, electrical engineering, or a related field. Familiarity with real-time operating systems (RTOS), version control tools like Git, and hardware debugging tools is commonly required, and certifications like Certified Embedded Systems Engineer (CESE) are a plus. Excellent problem-solving, self-motivation, and clear communication are important soft skills for effective remote collaboration. These capabilities enable you to deliver reliable, efficient solutions in a distributed work environment while supporting cross-functional teams and project objectives.

What are some common challenges faced by remote embedded software engineers, and how can they be addressed?

Remote Embedded Software Engineers often encounter challenges such as limited direct access to physical hardware, coordinating across different time zones with team members, and maintaining effective communication for troubleshooting and integration tasks. These challenges can be mitigated by utilizing remote hardware labs, well-established code repositories, and clear documentation practices. Regular video meetings, collaborative development tools, and proactive status updates also help keep projects on track and align team efforts. By staying organized and responsive, remote engineers can overcome these obstacles and deliver high-quality embedded solutions.

Job description

Job Description SummaryHelp Build the Future of Connected Neonatal Care
Our mission is simple: help send mothers and infants home healthy.
The Infant Care team develops innovative medical technologies that support clinicians in Neonatal Intensive Care Units and Labor & Delivery departments worldwide. We build safe, reliable, and connected systems that enable critical clinical care for some of healthcare's most vulnerable patients.
In this role you will develop the connectivity, interoperability, networking, and cybersecurity capabilities that allow medical devices to securely exchange patient information with hospital systems, central monitoring stations, and cloud-based management platforms.
The software you build will support clinicians caring for critically ill newborns and mothers, helping ensure critical patient information is available when it matters most.Job Description

Why This Role Matters

Modern healthcare depends on reliable, secure communication between devices and clinical systems.

In this role, you will help build software that:

  • Connects medical devices to hospital information systems
  • Enables real-time clinical data exchange
  • Supports secure remote device management
  • Improves device reliability and cybersecurity
  • Helps clinicians make informed decisions faster

Your work will directly impact patient care in some of the most critical healthcare environments.

Ideal Candidate Profile

We are open to candidates with deep expertise in either healthcare interoperability or embedded connectivity technologies.

You may be a great fit if your background includes:

  • Embedded Linux software development
  • Healthcare interoperability (HL7, FHIR, healthcare integrations)
  • Network communications and secure connectivity
  • Connected medical devices
  • IoT or cloud-connected systems
  • Telecommunications software
  • Industrial automation systems
  • High-reliability software platforms

Medical device experience is preferred but not required.

We value strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to learn new technologies.

What You'll Build

  • Connectivity services for connected neonatal care devices
  • HL7 and healthcare interoperability integrations
  • Secure networking and communication services
  • Fleet management and remote service capabilities
  • Wireless connectivity features
  • Cloud-connected device management solutions

Key Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and maintain connectivity software for connected medical devices.
  • Develop interoperability solutions supporting communication with hospital information systems.
  • Design and implement secure communication services using industry-standard networking and cybersecurity practices.
  • Develop and support fleet management, remote monitoring, and device management capabilities.
  • Implement and maintain wireless networking features for connected products.
  • Collaborate with systems, software, cybersecurity, quality, and clinical engineering teams.
  • Participate in architecture reviews, design reviews, and code reviews.
  • Support verification, validation, and regulatory compliance activities throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Investigate and resolve connectivity, interoperability, performance, and reliability issues.
  • Contribute to long-term platform architecture and technical strategy.

What Success Looks Like During Your First Year

  • Deliver production-ready connectivity and interoperability features.
  • Successfully integrate device software with hospital systems and external platforms.
  • Improve networking reliability, performance, and security.
  • Contribute to fleet management and cloud connectivity initiatives.
  • Become a key technical contributor to the next-generation neonatal care platform.
