What is a senior EDI developer?
A Senior EDI Developer is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems that support seamless data exchange between businesses. They work with various EDI standards, troubleshoot integration issues, and optimize workflows for efficiency. Additionally, they collaborate with business analysts, trading partners, and IT teams to ensure smooth data transmission. Their role often includes mentoring junior developers and implementing best practices for EDI solutions.

How to become a senior EDI developer?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior EDI developer?
To thrive as a Senior EDI Developer, you need in-depth knowledge of EDI standards (such as X12, EDIFACT), strong programming skills, experience with integration platforms, and a relevant degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with EDI mapping tools (like Gentran, Sterling Integrator), VANs, and certifications in EDI technologies or supply chain solutions are commonly expected. Excellent problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication with both technical and business stakeholders are valuable soft skills. These capabilities ensure accurate, secure, and timely electronic data exchanges vital for business operations and supply chain efficiency.
What are some typical challenges faced by senior EDI developers, and how can they be addressed?
Senior EDI Developers often encounter challenges such as integrating legacy systems with modern platforms, ensuring data compliance with various partner requirements, and troubleshooting complex data transformation issues. Staying updated on evolving industry standards and managing multiple trading partner specifications require strong attention to detail and proactive communication. Addressing these challenges usually involves close collaboration with business analysts, IT support, and vendors, as well as ongoing professional development. Having robust documentation and testing procedures in place can greatly assist in minimizing errors and streamlining implementation. Employers typically look for candidates who demonstrate adaptability and a solution-focused mindset when handling such scenarios.

- Configure integration connectivity and protocols (as applicable): MLLP/TCP, file/SFTP, web services/APIs; manage certificates/secure transport where required.
- Perform end-to-end testing (unit/integrated/regression/cutover), validate message content and downstream behavior, and support go-lives.
- Monitor interface health: queues, message traceability, alerts, dashboards; create and maintain runbooks/SOPs and operational documentation.
- Lead/participate in incident triage and root-cause analysis (RCA) across upstream/downstream systems; implement fixes and preventive controls.
- Follow change control and release management practices: environment promotions, documentation, peer review, and coordinated cutovers.
- Collaborate with Epic application teams, integration platform teams, infrastructure/network/security, and vendors to deliver stable integration outcomes.
- Ensure alignment with privacy/security/compliance expectations (HIPAA-aware handling, least privilege access, auditability).
- Bachelor's degree, preferably in Computer Science, Information Technology, Computer Engineering, or related IT discipline; or equivalent experience
- Epic Bridges certification (current/active, per organization requirements).
- Strong hands-on experience with InterSystems HealthConnect development and production support.
- Strong knowledge of HL7 v2.x structure and operations (segments/fields, ACK workflows, message troubleshooting).
- Experience in delivering and supporting interfaces in production (including on-call or time-sensitive support).

- Experience with FHIR and API-based integration patterns (REST, OAuth2) in healthcare settings.
- Experience with an additional interface engine or tooling (e.g., Cloverleaf, Rhapsody, Mirth/NextGen Connect, InterSystems IRIS for Health interoperability features).
- Knowledge of X12 (claims/EDI) for revenue cycle integrations and/or other healthcare standards (e.g., C-CDA, DICOM) depending on domain.
