Job description

Senior Driver

JOB TITLE:                 Sanitation Senior Driver

CLASSIFICATION:    Non-Exempt

DEPARTMENT:        Public Works/Transfer Station

SUPERVISOR:          Collections Foreman and/or Transfer Station Manager

SALARY:                    $49,539 to $59,446 Annually

GENERAL JOB DESCRIPTION                                                                                                  

To perform sanitation collection services for commercial and residential accounts for the city, to deliver sanitation to designated site, and to perform minor maintenance and cleaning activities on heavy equipment.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                              

  • Independently operate and maintain any assigned Sanitation equipment.
  • Perform and properly document pre-trip inspections.
  • Perform sanitation collection services for commercial and residential accounts for the city; deliver solid waste to designated facility. Ensure all assigned stops (routes or extra items) are collected on the assigned day.       
  • Perform minor maintenance activities on sanitation heavy equipment; clean sanitation equipment; ensure dumpster yard is maintained and orderly if assigned.
  • Maintain appropriate logs and records on collection and delivery activities.
  • Perform work activities according to safe work practices and procedures; clean and maintain all containment areas commercial route.
  • Pick up additional bags and boxes outside of carts and/or containment areas and properly document to ensure additional charges.
  • Utilize FleetMind system daily. (Includes pre/post trips, assigned routes and stops, exceptions, or any other use of FleetMind system.)

SECONDARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES                                                                                                               

  • Wear designated PPE when required – Hard hat, safety vest, steel-toe boots, safety glasses, and gloves.
  • Reports any safety concerns to the Transfer Station Manager and/or the Safety Coordinator.
  • Report any obstructions that impede collections services to supervisor.
  • Help train other colleagues on sanitation trucks or equipment.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required.
  • Sweep, clean, wash or collect solid waste around the City of Cheyenne or transfer station.  
  • Able to operate two (2) or more heavy Sanitation collection trucks.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES                                                                            

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted during work.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of sanitation collection.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and standard safety practices.
  • Ability to perform sanitation services for commercial and residential accounts for the city.
  • Knowledge of pertinent federal, state, or local laws, regulations, or ordinances.
  • Ability to deliver solid waste to the designated city transfer station.
  • Knowledge of city streets layout.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance activities on sanitation heavy equipment.
  • Knowledge of Fleetmind system and ability to operate Fleetmind.

QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE JOB                                                                              

Required:

One (1) year of increasing responsibility in sanitary services including the collection and delivery of solid waste. 

Wyoming Class B Commercial Driver’s License.

Preferred:

Three (3) years of increasing responsibility in sanitary services including the collection and delivery of solid waste. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS                                                                                         

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to maintain effective audio-visual discrimination and perception needed for making observations, communicating with others, reading, and writing. The employee is also required to maintain the physical condition necessary for operating assigned equipment, walking, standing, kneeling, repeated bending or sitting for prolonged periods of time and lifting to 50 pounds. Maintain mental capacity which allows the capability of making sound decisions demonstrating intellectual capabilities.

Working Environment:

Must be able to enter and exit the sanitation vehicle multiple times per day. Travel from site to site:  field environment exposure to noise, dust, smoke, fumes, gases, and infectious materials, and inclement weather conditions; work around heavy sanitation equipment
