What is a senior digital designer?

Senior Digital Designers are experienced professionals who create and oversee digital visual content for websites, apps, advertising, and other digital platforms. They are responsible for conceptualizing design solutions, developing user interfaces, and ensuring visual consistency across digital products. In addition to design work, they often mentor junior designers, collaborate with developers and marketing teams, and lead design projects from concept to completion. Their expertise helps organizations deliver engaging and effective digital experiences.

How does a senior digital designer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

Senior Digital Designers regularly work alongside UX/UI designers, developers, product managers, and marketing teams to ensure cohesive project outcomes. They participate in brainstorming sessions, provide creative direction, and communicate design concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Close collaboration helps them align visual elements with user needs and business goals, while also incorporating feedback efficiently throughout the design and development process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior digital designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Digital Designer, you need expertise in visual design principles, UX/UI best practices, and a strong portfolio demonstrating advanced digital design work—usually supported by a relevant degree or equivalent experience. Mastery of design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and prototyping software is typically required, along with knowledge of responsive and interactive design systems. Outstanding collaboration, creative problem-solving, and effective communication skills help you work with cross-functional teams and articulate design concepts. These skills ensure the delivery of innovative, user-centered digital experiences that meet business goals and drive user engagement.

Job description

Join the leader in entertainment innovation and help us design the future. At Dolby, science meets art, and high tech means more than computer code. As a member of the Dolby team, you’ll see and hear the results of your work everywhere, from movie theaters to smartphones. We continue to revolutionize how people create, deliver, and enjoy entertainment worldwide. To do that, we need the absolute best talent. We’re big enough to give you all the resources you need, and small enough so you can make a real difference and earn recognition for your work. We offer a collegial culture, challenging projects, and excellent compensation and benefits, not to mention a Flex Work approach that is truly flexible to support where, when, and how you do your best work.

The Advanced Technology Group (ATG) is the research division of the company. ATG’s mission is to look ahead, deliver insights, and innovate technological solutions that will fuel Dolby’s continued growth. Our researchers have a broad range of expertise related to computer science and electrical engineering, such as AI/ML, algorithms, digital signal processing, audio engineering, image processing, computer vision, data science & analytics, distributed systems, cloud, edge & mobile computing, computer networking, and IoT.

We are seeking an Experience Designer to help create Proofs of Experience (PoE): tangible, experiential artifacts that make early ideas, technologies, and workflows understandable, discussable, and testable. These PoEs are exploratory demonstrations designed to help teams and stakeholders evaluate what is possible, surface assumptions, and inform next steps.

This hybrid role sits at the intersection of design, media, and creative technology. You will collaborate with researchers and engineers on emerging media and early‑stage technical concepts, shaping them into experiences that can be felt and understood through video, audio, interactive demos, lightweight 2D or 3D experiences, or spatial and media-based prototypes.

What You Will Accomplish
  • Collaborate with engineers, researchers, and product partners to explore how new technical capabilities could become coherent, meaningful, and differentiated user experiences.
  • Develop visual narratives, storyboards, demo flows, walkthroughs, or videos that clearly communicate what an experience is, how it works, and why it matters.
  • Frame experiential hypotheses and design PoEs that allow new concepts, workflows, or technologies to be directly encountered and evaluated. These PoEs will be used in internal research reviews, leadership discussions, and cross‑disciplinary alignment moments to make early ideas concrete and discussable.
  • Create media and interactive prototypes using appropriate tools, which may include video editors and digital audio workstations, graphic and design tools, touch designer, Max MSP, web experiences or game engines.
  • Conduct structured iterations based on feedback and learning, exercising judgment about what to refine, what to leave unresolved, and when a PoE has answered its core questions.
  • Document design intent, assumptions, constraints, and key takeaways so that each PoE contributes to shared understanding and supports future decision‑making.
  • Facilitate ideation workshops to explore new use‑cases from an experiential perspective.
What We Are Looking For

You have:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field with 5 years of UX experience in a tech‑oriented role or Master’s Degree in Computer Science or related field with 3 years of UX experience in a tech‑related role
  • A background in interaction design, experience design, media production, or creative technology, with example past roles including interaction designer, experience prototyper, or creative technologist.
  • Strong empathy for creators and end users, with an understanding of how people experience media and how creators use tools to design, shape, and publish it.
  • Comfort working with ambiguity, incomplete inputs, and early‑stage ideas, with the ability to shape them into something concrete and experiential.
  • Creative skills in many of the following disciplines: video, audio, graphic design, motion design, interface design, creative technology; and the ability to flexibly use those skills to explore and demonstrate the potential of new technologies.
  • The ability to communicate concepts clearly through visuals, flows, prototypes, and demos, including articulating what a prototype shows and what remains intentionally unresolved.
  • A portfolio that demonstrates concept‑driven prototypes, experiential demos, or experimental projects, showing intent and structured iteration.
Nice to Have
  • Experience working in R&D, incubation, or early‑stage product environments where exploration and learning are primary goals.
  • Experience with immersive or spatial media, such as immersive audio, immersive video, or interactive immersive installations.
  • Comfortable with writing code to control media tools through scripting and engage with engineers on technical constraints and possibilities.
  • Experience with high‑end creative workflows and systems in domains such as film, live visuals, projection mapping, or lighting.
  • Familiarity with AI models and generative tools, and an intuition for how they can be applied to create, shape, or augment media experiences.
