Summary:

FET Variperm is a class leading service and supply company specializing in sand control engineering, completion and work-over tools and cased hole fishing services. And that’s what we do: our customized sand control solutions allow us to respond quickly to the ever-changing variability of our customers’ vertical and horizontal well operations.

The Sr. Design Engineer is a key member of the engineering team, responsible for the design, development, and continuous improvement of specialized products and equipment that meet customer requirements and evolving market demands. The role creates and maintains engineering documentation, identifies product improvement opportunities, and implements effective engineering solutions. This position also involves hands-on participation in product testing in lab and field environments to ensure product performance, reliability, and quality standards are achieved.

Job Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Design, modify and troubleshoot specialized equipment and products using 3D CAD software
  • Directing the construction of new products and equipment
  • Research local codes, guidelines, and design criteria for the development of products and equipment
  • Produce technical documentation for products including part drawings, assembly drawings , sale drawings etc.
  • Evaluating the assembly, performance and design of new products or equipment.
  • Manage project charters and design file systems.
  • Reporting on project charters, testing documentation and design analysis of a product development lifecycle
  • Evaluating products and equipment using analytical models and software analysis (ie. FEA, Mathcad)
  • Advising on the development of work instructions to aid in the manufacturing process
  • Directing technical inspections to identify critical components and advising on quality control methods
  • Undertake hands-on work in all stages of product development (first article inspection, assembly, physical testing etc)
  • Other duties as required

Skills/Knowledge

  • Self-motivated and proactive, with the ability to manage priorities and drive results.
  • Strong computer skills, including experience with SolidWorks, Enterprise PDM, ANSYS, Mathcad, Microsoft Office, and data acquisition software.
  • Detail-oriented with strong ownership of documentation, configuration management, and data accuracy.
  • Strong understanding of materials and stress mechanics
  • Strong organizational and project management skills
  • Knowledge of quality programs such as ISO 9001:2015 and API
  • Knowledge in oilfield well construction/completion an asset
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and capabilities

Education

  • Mechanical Engineering Technologist, C.E.T. an asset, or a Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • Eng. designation with APEGA, or eligibility and active pursuit of registration, is preferred.

Experience

  • 10+ years’ experience in research and development or design engineering.
  • Oil and Gas experience with knowledge in downhole tool design.
  • Experience with automation, programming, PLCs, and C++ is considered an asset.
