What does a Senior Data Architect do?

A Senior Data Architect is responsible for designing, creating, and managing an organization's data infrastructure and strategy. They ensure that data is stored, organized, and accessed efficiently, supporting business goals and analytics needs. Their role often includes selecting appropriate database technologies, defining data models, setting data governance policies, and ensuring security and compliance. Senior Data Architects also collaborate with IT teams, data scientists, and business stakeholders to align data solutions with company objectives.

How does a Senior Data Architect typically collaborate with other teams within an organization?

A Senior Data Architect regularly works with cross-functional teams, including data engineers, business analysts, software developers, and IT leadership. They serve as the bridge between business requirements and technical implementation, ensuring data models and architecture align with organizational goals. Effective collaboration is key, as they often lead design sessions, review data standards, and provide guidance on best practices. This role requires strong communication skills to translate complex technical concepts into actionable plans for both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Senior Data Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Data Architect, you need deep expertise in data modeling, database design, and data integration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Mastery of modern database platforms (e.g., SQL, NoSQL), cloud data services (like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), and relevant certifications such as CDMP or AWS Certified Data Analytics are commonly required. Exceptional problem-solving, stakeholder communication, and leadership skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure robust, scalable data architectures that align with business goals and enable effective decision-making.

Job description

Senior Data Architect
This is a remote position.
Ad Hoc is a technology company that empowers organizations to deliver scalable, impactful digital services. Using modern, agile methods, our team creates products that meet people's needs and transform their experience of government.
Work on things that matter
Our collaborations have shaped some of the defining moments in public-sector service delivery. We've helped build products that connect Veterans to tailored services, help millions access affordable health care, and support important programs like Head Start. As we work with agencies to deliver critical services, we're also changing how the government approaches technology.
Built for a remote life
Our culture, communications, and tools are built for remote work, enabling us to bring together top talent nationwide. At Ad Hoc, remote life empowers our teams to design work environments that fit their lives and that foster flexibility and collaboration to achieve positive outcomes for our customers.
Committed to high expectations and a welcoming culture
Ad Hoc values acceptance, accountability, and humility. We aren't heroes. We learn from our mistakes and improve the process for the next time. We build small, inclusive teams to collaborate closely with our partners to solve the right problems and deliver software that works.
The Federal Civilian business unit supports many customers spanning the federal, commercial, and nonprofit space. Our customers include NASA, the General Services Administration, Office of Personnel Management, the Library of Congress, Health & Human Services, and the FDIC. We partner with these agencies to build new capabilities, deliver products, establish data as a strategic asset for informed decision-making, modernize legacy systems, and build the digital service infrastructure necessary to scale their mission impact.
Primary Responsibilities
Senior Data Architect serves as an experienced individual contributor within a team, with the expectation that you will further develop your leadership, guidance, and mentoring skills. With minimal oversight from leadership, you will be responsible for supporting the goal of meeting scope, schedule, and delivery requirements. A Senior Data Architect impacts the long-term goals of the program, while contributing to the development of the program's data architecture strategy. You may serve as the discipline's primary lead when working with stakeholders and utilize strong influential skills to drive improvements in data architecture processes and practices. Primary expectations of a Senior Data Architect include:
  • Lead complex legacy data migrations end-to-end, including schema mapping, data profiling, phased migration sequencing, parallel-run validation, and cutover with automated rollback procedures
  • Design and maintain cloud-native data pipelines using event-driven infrastructure (SNS/SQS, Lambda/Step Functions) to support BI and analytics workflows
  • Architect data analytics repositories that are production-ready, monitored, and fully documented so agency staff and external tools can operate without contractor dependency
  • Manage digital artifact and content management lifecycles including upload, storage, review, and archiving across AWS and Azure/M365 environments
  • Drive data governance across programs, including lineage documentation, dictionary standardization, and glossary development
  • Align data architecture and standardize access patterns to make data available to BI tools, apps, and web platforms
  • Translate business and agency requirements into functional BI portals and dashboards
  • Present architectural decisions clearly to mixed audiences, from engineers to product owners to federal agency stakeholders
  • Mentor junior analysts and engineers and participate in technical interviews and candidate evaluations
  • May lead small, less critical, or temporary structures and projects

Basic Qualifications
  • 7+ years of relevant data architecture experience and a Bachelor's degree, or equivalent additional experience in lieu of a degree
  • Must meet federal suitability requirements and pass a background investigation as a condition of employment
  • Proven experience leading large-scale legacy data migrations, including schema mapping, phased migration strategy, and cutover with rollback validation
  • Deep expertise with relational (Oracle, RDS) and non-relational databases, and a solid understanding of how structural variability in legacy systems creates downstream migration risk
  • Hands-on experience building event-driven pipeline infrastructure (SNS/SQS, Lambda/Step Functions)
  • Working knowledge of AWS (S3, CloudWatch, OpenSearch) and Azure/M365 environments
  • Strong grasp of data governance principles, lineage documentation, and data dictionary/glossary standardization

Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience with federal agency data environments or government digital services modernization
  • Familiarity with digital artifact/content management lifecycles at scale: upload, storage, review, and archiving
  • Experience implementing automated reconciliation and referential integrity validation during migrations
  • Exposure to interoperability patterns across AWS and Azure/M365 environments
  • Mentorship or technical lead experience within a cross-functional delivery team
