A Senior Commercial Portfolio Manager (CRE) is responsible for managing existing commercial bank relationships, which includes the sale and underwriting of credit and non-credit products offered within the commercial bank. While the Senior Commercial Portfolio Manager is not expected to source new business from prospects, they are welcome to do so under the guidance of the Regional Director. Senior Commercial Portfolio Managers possess outstanding customer service skills as well as strong credit underwriting skills. Senior Commercial Portfolio Managers will be expected to partner with the appropriate commercial banking colleagues (Loan Coordinators, Credit Analysts) to deliver credit relationships with the guidance of Credit Administration and the Regional Director. Senior Commercial Portfolio Managers works closely with Treasury Relationship Management (TRM) colleagues to grow and service the non-credit needs of commercial clients. This position will develop and manage commercial relationships which meet established lending and client selectivity requirements and provide maximum profitability to the Bank with a minimum of risk.

KEY FUNCTIONS:

  • Proactively manages existing commercial relationships that can include new business opportunities, credit renewals, accurate risk ratings as well as covenant monitoring and reporting. Actively involved in instilling and maintaining a positive sales environment through education of the Bank’s products and services; investigates and follows up on significant changes in status of existing customers; focuses on quality customer maintenance responsibilities; meets with customers to discuss needs and outlines appropriate Bank services; resolves customer concerns or problems as necessary.
  • Establish, and negotiate where necessary, the terms under which credit will be extended, including the costs, repayment method and schedule and collateral requirements.
  • Develops a deep understanding of non-credit products; leads the engagement with clients and prospects, uncovering opportunities and appropriate solutions to help the clients more efficiently manage cash flow.
  • Performs all required portfolio management responsibilities, including but not limited to monitoring of customers’ financial reporting requirements and compliance with covenants.
  • Seeks to be a trusted advisor by maintaining current knowledge on the customers’ business and industry.
  • Develop materials for and make loan presentations to Credit Administration and Sr. Loan Committee, where required.
  • Serves as a contact for non-borrowing and borrowing clients for matters relating to other Bank services.
  • Counsels with and assists in the training and development of Banking Officers, Loan Coordinators and Credit Analysts.
  • Completes special projects assigned by manager.

Ensuring Regulatory & Operational Excellence: 

  • Maintain the integrity of WaFd’s business needs in all lending and deposit account processes and servicing activities. Adhere to bank policies and procedures designed to comply with federal regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act, USA Patriot Act and OFAC regulations. To that end, ensure timely and accurate preparation of reports and other recordkeeping requirements.
  • Complete and pass all assigned eLearning courses and assigned certifications as required.

  • Always adhere to security and compliance procedures.
  • Avoid all real or perceived conflicts of interest and always maintain client privacy and   confidentiality.

 Education/Skills/Training:

  • Bachelor's Degree or approved equivalent combination of education and experience. Work-related experience should consist of commercial financial analysis, homebuilder finance, or a commercial lending background. Educational experience, through in-house training sessions, formal business school, or financial industry related curriculum.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, and technical procedures.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from diverse groups, including managers, customers, and members of the public.
  • Experience in utilization of nCino Commercial Loan Origination System is desired.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint).
  • Strong typing skills to meet production needs of the position.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Effective verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills, ability to write reports and correspondence and speak clearly to customers and employees.
  • Ability to deal with normal problems involving multiple facets and variables in non-standardized situations and apply common sense in carrying out instructions and solving problems.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision while performing duties.

Experience: 

  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in both commercial credit analysis and full project underwriting, or related areas. Current responsibilities in a senior-scoped role are desired.
  • Strong experience, knowledge and training in fully underwriting complex and sophisticated commercial real estate projects, both at stabilization and especially for ground-up construction – as well as communicating these structures with external clients of the Bank.  Underwriting and structuring land development projects and having a keen understanding of homebuilder finance construction projects is also desired.
  • Strong experience, knowledge, and training in both corporate and personal financial statement / tax return analysis, typically resulting from a combination of education in accounting, financial and/or credit analysis or related areas.
