What is a senior book designer?

Senior Book Designers are experienced professionals responsible for the overall visual design and layout of books. They collaborate with authors, editors, and publishers to create appealing covers, interior layouts, and typographic elements that enhance the reader's experience and reflect the book's content and target audience. Their role often includes overseeing the design process, mentoring junior designers, and ensuring that all design work meets publishing standards and deadlines.

How does a senior book designer typically collaborate with authors, editors, and other creative professionals during the book production process?

As a Senior Book Designer, you will regularly work closely with authors to understand their vision and with editors to ensure the design aligns with the book’s content and target audience. Collaboration often includes presenting design concepts, incorporating feedback, and coordinating with illustrators, photographers, and production teams to ensure a cohesive final product. Clear communication and the ability to balance creative ideas with practical constraints are essential. DEPARTMENT:                  Design

REPORTS TO:                   Director of Design

Key Relationships:

Internal:    HPI Design and Procurement Departments.

External:   SRI Projects Team, SRI Department Heads, Resorts Management, Design Consultants, UVI and Vendors.

About Hospitality Purveyors International

Hospitality Purveyors International (HPI) is the exclusive design and procurement arm for all Sandals Resorts International properties which are wholly owned and managed resorts

About the Role

The Senior Interior Designer plays a pivotal role within the Design Studio, leading the creative development of multiple projects from concept through completion. This position combines strong design expertise with project management acumen, ensuring that every project reflects the brand’s vision, operational goals, and regional character. This role provides guidance to junior team members while collaborating closely with design managers, regional project managers, and cross-functional partners to deliver exceptional, design-driven guest experiences.

Key Responsibilities:

Design Leadership & Project Execution

  • Lead the creative process for assigned projects across all phases — from concept and schematic design to construction documentation and installation.

·         Develop and present compelling design narratives, concept packages, material palettes, and FF&E selections that align with the brand DNA and property’s unique context.

·         Translate conceptual ideas into detailed design solutions that balance creativity, functionality, and budget requirements.

·         Participate in research and development efforts to identify regional materials, artisans, and vendors that enrich project storytelling.

·         Apply and uphold brand and regional design standards, while contributing creative ideas that evolve and strengthen the brand’s design language.

Collaboration & Mentorship

  • Partner with cross-functional teams, including Architecture, regional Project Management, Procurement, Food & Beverage, SRI Design Central and Product Development teams, to create cohesive and operationally sound design solutions.
  • Liaise with on-site Project Managers to promptly resolve construction/installation issues
  • Provide day-to-day guidance and feedback to junior designers, fostering growth, accountability, and technical/creative proficiency.

·         Contribute to the creative culture of the studio through collaboration, inspiration sharing, and thought leadership

Project Documentation & Communication

  • Create, organize and manage design budgets, as well as design requisitions and specifications in Fohlio
  • Collaborate with internal Architectural Designers to execute production and construction documents, managing project timelines and leading collaborative conversations with external consultants. Participate in the architectural design process by reviewing and analyzing project documentation.
  • Produce high-quality design presentations and documentation, ensuring clarity, accuracy, and brand alignment.
  • Participate in project programming meetings, ensuring all HPI partners are included in relevant discussions. Lead project hand-over meetings and CD page turn meetings. Create detailed “Look-book” or hand over documents to ensure operational support and maintenance.
  • Review shop drawings, submittals, RFI’s and prototypes to ensure alignment with design intent and quality standards.
  • Travel to job sites for project installations, and for property inspection reports.

Required Qualifications

  • 8+ years of interior design experience, with a strong focus in hospitality, F&B, and branded environments
  • Experience working on high-end hotel/resort projects
  • Exceptional communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
  • Strong eye for detail, storytelling, and spatial quality
  • Proficiency in industry tools such as AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, and FF&E sourcing platforms
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or related field
  • NCIDQ certification or LEED AP is a plus
  • International hospitality project experience is highly desirable
