Job description

Job Title: Production Book Designer
Department: Design
Supervisor: Senior Art Director
FSLA Status: Non-Exempt
Job Class: Full-Time
Location: In office 3 days a week (T-Th) in North Adams, MA; remote M and F
Position Purpose:
Using InDesign (and occasionally legacy file formats), the Production Book Designer makes corrections and minor additions or adjustments to reprints of Storey's books; prepares print-ready files; and manages the archive of reprint files. This position is also responsible for coordinating file deliveries to other publishers who have purchased rights to our books, in-house staff that need to repurpose files, or other partners with approved access. In addition, under the guidance of an Art Director, the Production Designer will use their expertise in design and computer applications to build frontlist print books; make suggestions and corrections throughout the book building process to increase quality and to ensure that standards are met.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Backlist Book Production
Reprints
  • Make corrections and updates to backlist books.
  • Prepare and deliver print-ready files.
  • Communicate closely with the production associate responsible for reprints and strictly follow established procedural protocols.

International, Premium, and Co-Editions
  • Coordinate and prepare files for delivery to international clients publishing foreign-language editions of Storey books.
  • Coordinate and prepare files for co-editions, premium, and custom sales.
  • Communicate closely with the colleague responsible for these sales to understand the client's needs and timeline.

Archives
  • Locate and deliver files from archived books to in-house staff or publishing partners as needed.
  • Organize and maintain an archive of reprint corrections.

Frontlist Book Production
  • Build book interiors, which will include: collaborating with an Art Director to produce a complete book based on sample pages.
  • Assist in making corrections at any stage in the book production/circulation process
  • Collaborate with and support Prepress and Production departments to ensure the quality and correctness of print reproduction, which includes preparing clean files for transmittal to Prepress.
  • Keep up to date with programs, scripts, and processes to aid in book building and design.

Other:
  • Coordinating files for print-on-demand books.
  • Organizing proofs for use as reference on press.
  • Taking the initiative to assume responsibility for additional duties as required.

Education/Skill Requirements:
  • At least 2 years of work experience in multi-page document layout, with an ability to prepare electronic files for press.
  • Working knowledge of Photoshop, Acrobat, and InDesign
  • Experience with Microsoft Word and Excel
  • Ability to work independently with limited supervision.
  • Ability to communicate, collaborate, and problem-solve effectively with a variety of people.
  • Ability to work under pressure in a constantly changing environment.
  • Ability to represent Storey professionally to external parties, including custom clients, printers, and other vendors.
  • Experience and judgment necessary to plan and accomplish complex goals.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Positive attitude.
  • Enthusiasm for book production and team approaches.

The compensation for this position is $54,000. Salary can vary based on a number of factors including skills, experience, and location - talk with your recruiter to learn more.
