What is a senior automation engineer?

The duties of a senior automation engineer are to develop, design, and configure systems that automate processes, such as manufacturing or software processes. Some people in this position work exclusively with software design while others work with hardware design and production. Some may provide both digital and physical solutions to automation problems. Regardless of the field, the responsibilities of a senior automation engineer are to improve efficiency while reducing the number of people it takes to complete a given process. Qualifications typically include a bachelor’s or master’s degree, experience in the industry, and leadership skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a senior automation engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Senior Automation Engineer, you need a deep understanding of automation frameworks, scripting languages (such as Python or Java), and a relevant engineering degree. Familiarity with tools like Selenium, Jenkins, Docker, and CI/CD systems, along with certifications like ISTQB or Certified Automation Professional (CAP), is often required. Strong problem-solving abilities, leadership, effective communication, and collaboration skills help you excel in guiding teams and managing complex projects. These skills and qualifications are vital for ensuring the reliability, scalability, and efficiency of automated systems in fast-paced technical environments.

How does a senior automation engineer typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during large-scale projects?

Senior Automation Engineers frequently work alongside software developers, QA specialists, and operations teams to design and implement robust automated testing frameworks or process automation solutions. They often lead discussions to identify automation opportunities, define requirements, and ensure that automation integrates smoothly into existing workflows. Effective communication and documentation skills are essential, as they must translate complex technical needs for non-technical stakeholders and align efforts across departments. Collaboration may also involve mentoring junior engineers and conducting code reviews to maintain high standards and consistency.

Job description

Senior Automation Controls Engineer

Pay: $80k – $100k on experience; overtime eligible

Location: Lanco Integrated

At Lanco, no two machines are the same. We design and build fully custom automation systems for some of the most demanding industries in the world such as medical, defense, and electronics. Our equipment runs in manufacturing facilities across the globe. As our Senior Automation Controls Engineer, you'll own the controls from code to commissioning, through writing the logic, integrating the systems, and standing behind your work when the customer runs acceptance testing.

This is a role for someone who has done it before - PLCs, HMIs, robots, vision systems, servo motion. If you’re someone who wants to do it at a higher level, on more interesting machines, with a team that’s genuinely engaged in the work, then this is the place for you. Unlike salaried roles at other companies, this position is hourly with overtime pay, so when projects run long or travel takes you on-site, your paycheck reflects it.

What You’ll Do
  • Own the controls programming on automation projects with PLC ladder logic, HMI development, and system integration from build through customer acceptance.
  • Integrate and commission complex technologies including robots (6‑axis, SCARA, Cartesian), vision systems (Cognex, Keyence), sensors, drives, and motion control.
  • Test machine sequences and verify that physical components (switches, actuators, cylinders) are wired and operating correctly before deployment.
  • Work closely with mechanical, electrical, and design teams throughout the full machine lifecycle.
  • Travel to customer sites for Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) execution, field updates, and occasional emergency service – travel time is compensated at your hourly rate plus a travel incentive.
  • Maintain clear documentation for wire lists, calibration data, technical specs, and machine manuals customers can actually use.
  • Mentor and support electrical and mechanical technicians during builds and debug.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of processes, documentation, and ISO procedures.
What You Bring
  • 5+ years of hands‑on experience in controls programming or industrial automation.
  • Strong PLC programming skills – ladder logic required; structured text or function block is a plus.
  • Hands‑on experience with HMI/SCADA development; Rockwell PanelView or FactoryTalk Optix experience is a plus.
  • Familiarity with industrial communication networks: Ethernet/IP, Modbus, ProfiNet, DeviceNet, or IO‑Link.
  • Experience integrating robots, vision systems, servo/stepper motion control, safety circuits, and AC/DC electrical systems.
  • Ability to read electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical documentation; basic understanding of pneumatic systems.
  • Comfortable troubleshooting complex control systems independently, including in customer‑facing and field environments.
  • A.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology, Electrical Engineering Technology, Mechatronics, or a related technical field; or equivalent hands‑on experience. B.S. preferred.
Life at Lanco

Lanco Integrated is a world‑class manufacturer of custom automation equipment with machines installed in 30+ countries, serving industries from medical to defense to consumer electronics. Every project is different, which means the problems you’ll solve here are never the same twice.

Our people are what set us apart – highly engaged, deeply skilled, and genuinely invested in the work. We’re proud to be an employee‑owned company through our ESOP. When Lanco wins, you win. We don’t just say it – we live it.

Benefits

We take care of our people, and their futures.

  • ESOP (Employee Stock Ownership Plan)
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Health, dental, and life insurance
  • Short and long‑term disability
  • Paid time off & paid holidays
  • Paid parental leave
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • Overtime pay means your extra hours are always compensated
