Position Overview

The Staff Accountant supports the Controller an accounting team by assisting with general ledger activities, financial reporting, and grant tracking. This role helps maintain accurate financial records, supports the monthly closing process, and assists with compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and grant requirements.


Job Responsibilities

General Ledger & Month-End Close

  • Prepare and post journal entries, including accruals, allocations, and reclassifications
  • Assist with month-end and year-end close processes
  • Reconcile general ledger accounts and investigate discrepancies

Financial Reporting Support

  • Assist with preparation of monthly financial reports and schedules
  • Support audit preparation and provide requested documentation
  • Ensure accurate recording of transactions from A/R, A/P, Payroll, and Billing
  • Assist with tracking grant expenditures to support compliance with grant agreements and funding restrictions
  • Maintain grant records, including budgets and supporting documents
  • Assist in preparation of grant financial reports and reimbursement requests
  • Reconcile grant-related accounts and ensure proper allocation of expenses
  • Assist with compliance with federal, state and private grant requirements, including allowable cost guidelines
  • Support grant audits and provide required documentation to auditors and funders

Compliance & Documentation

  • Maintain organized financial records and supporting documentation
  • Assist with nonprofit, grant, and Medicaid-related compliance
  • Support internal controls and adherence to accounting policies
  • Work collaboratively with other accounting staff to ensure timely and accurate reporting
  • Provide backup support to other accounting functions as needed

Qualifications

  • Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field
  • 2-3 years of accounting experience preferred but not required, preferably in a nonprofit or service-based organization
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and general ledger accounting
  • Experience with accounting software and Microsoft Excel, (SAGE preferred, not required)
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage deadlines and work effectively in a team environment
  • Strong commitment to the mission of supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities
