What is the difference between Semiconductor Foundry vs Semiconductor Equipment Engineer?
| Aspect | Semiconductor Foundry | Semiconductor Equipment Engineer |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Engineering degree in Electrical, Materials, or Chemical Engineering | Engineering degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering |
| Work Environment | Manufacturing facilities, cleanrooms, production lines | Equipment labs, manufacturing sites, maintenance areas |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Foundries like TSMC, Samsung, GlobalFoundries | Equipment suppliers, semiconductor fabs, R&D centers |
| Common Search & Comparison | Often compared for manufacturing roles | Compared for technical maintenance and equipment optimization |
The main difference is that Semiconductor Foundries focus on manufacturing semiconductor chips, overseeing fabrication processes. Semiconductor Equipment Engineers specialize in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing the machinery used in semiconductor production. Both roles require engineering backgrounds and work within semiconductor manufacturing environments, but their responsibilities differ significantly.

An exciting opportunity exists for experienced Principal Semiconductor Foundry Engineer to join our III-V foundry team at the RF Microelectronics/Module Development & Foundry Services department at Raytheon in Andover, MA. This department develops, designs, and manufactures compound semiconductor devices, microwave/millimeter-wave integrated circuits, and modules for defense applications.
The ideal candidates for these roles will have a broad understanding of semiconductor tools, processing techniques and microelectronic circuit testing. The successful candidates will support and execute process development efforts, assist in process sustainment, improve product yield, develop new processes and device capabilities, and assist in the creation of new technology discriminators in a III-V semiconductor wafer foundry. They may also develop proof of concept demonstrations of novel semiconductor processes, identify yield and process improvement opportunities, gather sponsorship and team resources, and execute on continuous improvement activities. Presence on the foundry floor is essential.
What You Will Do:
- Frequently work on the foundry floor and interact with various process engineering, equipment engineering, digital technologies, quality, facilities, and operations teams
- Sustainment of current production processes and involvement with development of new processes
- Review in-line electrical data trends and process control metrics.
- Investigate scrap and rework events with root cause tools and approaches
- Maintain technical documentation (recipes, out-of-control action plans, FMEAs)
- Identify process improvement opportunities.
- Manipulate large datasets and use statistical analysis to define SPC controls, manage projects, and assign risk
- Manage yield improvement and RCCA efforts supporting the production line
- Support capital qualification efforts.
