How much do semiconductor foundry jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 30, 2026, the average hourly pay for semiconductor foundry in the United States is $19.46, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $16.59 and $21.39 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some typical challenges faced when working in a semiconductor foundry environment?

Working in a semiconductor foundry often involves managing complex manufacturing processes and maintaining strict quality standards. Challenges can include troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, ensuring contamination control, and meeting tight production deadlines. Team members frequently collaborate with engineers, technicians, and quality assurance staff to resolve issues quickly and optimize yield. Adaptability and attention to detail are crucial, as even minor errors can impact the efficiency and output of the entire production line.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Semiconductor Foundry Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Semiconductor Foundry Engineer, you need a solid background in materials science, electrical engineering, or a related field, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with semiconductor fabrication equipment, cleanroom protocols, and software tools like CAD and process simulation platforms is typically required. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving abilities, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills for this role. These competencies ensure efficient production processes, high product quality, and successful collaboration in the fast-paced semiconductor manufacturing environment.

What is a semiconductor foundry?

A semiconductor foundry is a manufacturing facility that produces semiconductor chips for other companies based on their designs. Unlike integrated device manufacturers (IDMs) that both design and fabricate chips, foundries focus solely on manufacturing and do not design their own chips. Companies such as TSMC, GlobalFoundries, and Samsung Foundry are examples of leading semiconductor foundries. These facilities use advanced processes and equipment to fabricate chips used in various electronic devices, including smartphones, computers, and cars.

What is the difference between Semiconductor Foundry vs Semiconductor Equipment Engineer?

AspectSemiconductor FoundrySemiconductor Equipment Engineer
Required CredentialsEngineering degree in Electrical, Materials, or Chemical EngineeringEngineering degree in Electrical, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering
Work EnvironmentManufacturing facilities, cleanrooms, production linesEquipment labs, manufacturing sites, maintenance areas
Employer & Industry UsageFoundries like TSMC, Samsung, GlobalFoundriesEquipment suppliers, semiconductor fabs, R&D centers
Common Search & ComparisonOften compared for manufacturing rolesCompared for technical maintenance and equipment optimization

The main difference is that Semiconductor Foundries focus on manufacturing semiconductor chips, overseeing fabrication processes. Semiconductor Equipment Engineers specialize in maintaining, troubleshooting, and optimizing the machinery used in semiconductor production. Both roles require engineering backgrounds and work within semiconductor manufacturing environments, but their responsibilities differ significantly.
