Job description

Main Responsibilities
  • Perform troubleshooting, corrective maintenance, and preventative maintenance on laboratory equipment and instruments as required by regulatory agencies and manufacturer recommendations.
  • Use proficient knowledge of laboratory equipment, including centrifuges, incubators, balances, microscopes, pipettes, etc.
  • Prepare for and execute equipment installation, operation, and performance qualifications (IQ, OQ, PQ) of laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Possess a basic understanding of laboratory instruments such as analyzers and liquid handling devices.
  • Possess a basic understanding of robotic, conveyance, and automated systems.
  • Perform troubleshooting and repair of laboratory equipment and instruments.
  • Perform service, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of robots, conveyors, and automated production systems.
  • Maintain records of work performed with completed service, including cost of time and materials.
  • Maintain adequate inventory of supplies, equipment, reference materials, and spare parts to complete assignments.
  • Provide input on preventive maintenance tasks and scheduling.
  • Move equipment and automation between labs and buildings.
  • Participate in required safety training and other continuing education as directed by the Biomedical Service Engineering Supervisor.
  • Demonstrate a professional demeanor in all interactions and develop positive relationships internally and with outside vendors.
  • Meet all deadlines by effectively organizing time and work.
  • Satisfy on‑call requirements to ensure automated specimen delivery systems and other laboratory emergencies are repaired in a timely manner.
  • Assist in the ongoing training of Biomedical Service Technicians in the evaluation, repair, and installation of laboratory equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical and Other Requirements
  • Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending the spine at the waist.
  • Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Mobility: Crawl, lay on back, go prone and squeeze into tight spaces.
  • Temperature: Occasional work inside walk‑in freezers with temperature as low as –40°C.
  • Height: Occasional work using ladders as well as manual and powered lifts up to two stories high.
  • Communicate: Frequently and effectively communicate with others.
  • PPE: Biohazard laboratory environment requiring use of personal protective equipment per CDC, OSHA regulations and company policies.
  • ARUP Policies and Procedures: Conduct self in compliance with all ARUP Policies and Procedures.
  • Authorized to Work: Must be a citizen of the United States or authorized to work in the United States.
  • Heavy Work: Exert up to 100 lb of force occasionally, up to 50 lb frequently, or up to 20 lb constantly to move objects.
  • Fine Motor Control: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working primarily with fingers rather than the whole hand.
  • Vision: Have close, far, and peripheral visual acuity to perform a variety of tasks such as general observations of depth and distance.
  • Color Vision: Perception of and ability to distinguish colors.
  • English: Ability to speak, read, and comprehend the English language.
  • Age: Must be 21 years old.
  • Valid Utah Driver’s License: No moving violations within the previous two years and no alcohol/drug‑related violations on record.
  • Continual Education: Continual assessment of current literature and best practices.
  • Ability to travel between locations in Salt Lake City.
  • Ability to travel out of state for up to three weeks at a time.
Qualifications Education
  • Required: High school diploma or equivalent or better.
  • Preferred: Bachelor's Degree or better in Biomedical Engineering or a related field.
Experience
  • Required: Bachelor's degree or equivalent college coursework in Engineering, Biological, or Chemical Science.
  • OR Associate’s degree with two (2) years of directly related experience in mechanical and/or electrical systems repair, or laboratory setting.
  • OR four (4) years of directly related experience as a Biomedical Service Engineer, Lab Service Engineer, Field Service Engineer, or other related experience.
  • Preferred: Experience in maintaining and troubleshooting laboratory equipment.

  • Driver License
