What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a seed researcher?

To thrive as a Seed Researcher, you need a strong background in plant science, genetics, and agronomy, usually supported by a relevant degree such as agronomy, biology, or plant science. Familiarity with laboratory analysis tools, statistical software, and field trial management systems is typically required. Critical thinking, attention to detail, and collaborative communication skills help researchers design experiments and interpret results effectively. These skills are crucial for developing improved seed varieties, optimizing crop yields, and advancing agricultural innovation.

What are the main challenges faced by professionals in seed research, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Seed Research often face challenges such as maintaining genetic purity, managing complex field trials, and adapting to unpredictable environmental conditions. To address these, researchers must implement rigorous quality control measures, collaborate closely with agronomists and biostatisticians, and stay current with advancements in biotechnology and data analysis. Effective communication within multidisciplinary teams and ongoing professional development are crucial for overcoming these obstacles and driving successful research outcomes.

What is a seed researcher?

Seed researchers are scientists who study the genetics, biology, and cultivation of seeds to develop improved plant varieties. Their work involves breeding new crop strains for better yield, disease resistance, and environmental adaptability. They conduct experiments in laboratories, greenhouses, and fields to analyze seed performance and quality. Seed researchers play a crucial role in ensuring food security and advancing agricultural technology.

Job description

Job Title: Embedded Engineer

Job Description

The Embedded Engineer designs and develops software for desktop and embedded .NET applications that directly control and monitor industrial hardware, including cameras, sensors, conveyors, actuators, and robotic systems. This role focuses on machine control using PLC programming in Structured Text and C#.NET, contributing to cutting-edge prototype equipment used in seed research and offering opportunities to expand skills and advance a technical career.

Responsibilities

  • Architect, develop, and maintain desktop and embedded .NET applications that interface with industrial hardware such as cameras, sensors, conveyors, actuators, and robotic systems.
  • Design and implement machine control solutions using C#.NET, ensuring reliable and precise operation of automated equipment.
  • Write, maintain, and optimize PLC programs in Structured Text (IEC 61131-3), with a strong preference for Beckhoff TwinCAT platforms.
  • Configure, program, and troubleshoot Epson RC+ robot controllers, integrating robotic pick-and-place and handling routines into larger automation workflows.
  • Implement, integrate, and debug industrial communication protocols including MQTT, MODBUS (RTU/TCP), EtherCAT, and other fieldbus or Ethernet-based standards.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to understand machine requirements and translate them into robust, maintainable software and PLC solutions.
  • Diagnose and resolve software, PLC, and communication issues to ensure stable operation of prototype and production equipment.
  • Maintain clear, well-structured code and documentation to support ongoing maintenance, knowledge sharing, and future enhancements.
  • Contribute to the development of cutting-edge prototype equipment used in seed research, providing technical input and continuous improvement ideas.
  • Continuously learn and adopt new tools, technologies, and methods related to embedded software, industrial automation, and robotics.

Essential Skills

  • Minimum 5 years of experience programming PLCs using Structured Text (IEC 61131-3), specifically for machine control applications.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience developing UI and machine control applications with C#.NET.
  • Strong proficiency in embedded software development for industrial automation environments.
  • Ability to perform machine control using PLC programming and C#.NET through Structured Text rather than ladder logic.
  • Hands-on experience with Beckhoff platforms, preferably TwinCAT, for PLC and motion control.
  • Experience implementing and debugging industrial communication protocols such as MQTT, MODBUS (RTU/TCP), EtherCAT, and other fieldbus or Ethernet-based standards.
  • Ability to program, configure, and troubleshoot industrial robotic systems, preferably using Epson RC+ controllers.
  • Solid understanding of industrial hardware integration, including cameras, sensors, conveyors, actuators, and robotic systems.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to diagnose and resolve complex automation and communication issues.
  • Proficiency in writing clean, maintainable, and well-documented code in C#.NET and Structured Text.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with Epson robotics and Epson RC+ controllers is highly desirable but not strictly required.
  • Familiarity with Beckhoff TwinCAT platforms and related tools for PLC and motion control is a strong plus.
  • Experience in industrial automation, machine building, or prototype equipment development is beneficial.
  • Interest in working with cutting-edge prototype equipment used in seed research and related experimental environments.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies, hardware platforms, and automation tools as part of ongoing career development.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills for working with multidisciplinary engineering and research teams.

Work Environment

This role is based in an office environment focused on creating code for machines and automation systems. The work centers on designing and implementing software and PLC logic that controls industrial hardware and prototype equipment used in seed research. You will primarily work on a computer, using development tools for C#.NET, Structured Text, Beckhoff TwinCAT, and Epson RC+ robotics, while collaborating with engineering and research teams to support innovative automation solutions.
