Job description

Job Summary:
GE Aerospace is a leader in advanced aviation systems, focusing on the integration of software and hardware for optimal performance. The Staff Software Engineer will design, develop, and lead software solutions for aerospace applications, ensuring safety and reliability throughout the software lifecycle.
Responsibilities:
• Identify, develop, evaluate, introduce, and manage software engineering solutions for complex aerospace systems, with emphasis on safety-critical and high-reliability applications.
• Apply software engineering best practices and (where applicable) control and systems engineering principles to design software with predictable, verifiable behavior across a range of operating conditions.
• Serve as the software technical lead for assigned products or features, including requirements definition, architecture, detailed design, integration strategy, verification, and issue resolution.
• Define and drive software architectures, interfaces, and design patterns that enable modularity, reuse, and robust integration with hardware, controls, and systems.
• Lead planning and execution of software development activities, including estimates, schedules, risk assessments, and technical reviews, ensuring alignment with program objectives.
• Promote and enforce modern software practices such as automated testing, continuous integration, static analysis, code review, configuration management, and secure coding.
• Broadly deepen and extend knowledge of relevant software technologies (for example real-time embedded systems, model-based development, data processing, connectivity, or cyber considerations).
• Develop a solid understanding of key business drivers and program priorities; use this understanding to make sound technical tradeoffs that support Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Cost objectives.
• Collaborate closely with systems engineering, controls, hardware, verification, and program leadership to ensure the software solution integrates correctly into the overall system.
• Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for assigned projects and tasks, consistent with engineering policies, procedures, and applicable standards or certification needs.
• Participate as a key presenter or reviewer in technical, design, and program reviews; lead closure of significant software-related actions.
• Provide day-to-day technical leadership and mentoring for less experienced software engineers to help develop their design, implementation, and verification skills.
Qualifications:
Required:
• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related STEM discipline from an accredited university or college.
• Minimum of 5 years of professional experience in software engineering for complex systems.
• This role requires the successful candidate to obtain and maintain US Government Security Clearance; prerequisite for a security clearance is U.S. citizenship.
Preferred:
• Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to explain technical software and system concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Proven experience leading software development for real-time embedded systems, avionics, or other high-reliability domains.
• Familiarity with model-based development environments (for example MATLAB/Simulink or similar) and integration of auto-generated code into embedded platforms is a plus where applicable.
• Experience with or exposure to aerospace or other safety-related software standards (for example DO-178C, ARP4754A, ISO 26262, or equivalent).
• Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively in a structured team environment, partnering effectively with systems, controls, hardware, test, and program management.
• Passion for developing robust, maintainable software, including practices such as automated testing, continuous integration, code quality metrics, and secure coding.
• Experience coaching and mentoring less experienced engineers, including support through design reviews, code reviews, and day-to-day technical guidance.
• Intrigued to work in an environment and on projects that cannot necessarily be broadly shared, and comfortable operating within appropriate security and information-handling constraints.
• Demonstrated experience acting as a technical lead for software on a product, subsystem, or major feature, including responsibility across the full development life cycle.
• Proficiency in one or more relevant programming languages (for example C/C++, Python, or similar), and experience with associated development environments and tools.
• Experience in designing, implementing, integrating, and testing production software.
• Working with real-time, embedded, or safety-/mission-critical systems (e.g., aerospace, defense, automotive, or industrial).
