How much do section 508 tester jobs pay per hour?
What is a Section 508 tester?
A Section 508 Tester is responsible for evaluating digital content, websites, and software applications to ensure they comply with Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, which mandates accessibility for individuals with disabilities. They use manual and automated testing tools to identify accessibility issues related to screen readers, keyboard navigation, color contrast, and other accessibility standards. Testers document findings, provide recommendations for remediation, and collaborate with developers and designers to improve accessibility compliance. Their role is crucial in making digital products usable for people with disabilities, ensuring legal compliance, and enhancing overall user experience.
What skills and qualifications are needed to be a Section 508 tester?
To thrive as a Section 508 Tester, you need a solid understanding of accessibility standards (especially Section 508 and WCAG), testing methodologies, and experience with manual and automated accessibility testing. Familiarity with tools like JAWS, NVDA, Axe, and WAVE, as well as knowledge of HTML, CSS, and ARIA, is highly beneficial, and certifications like IAAP CPACC are often preferred. Strong attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to clearly document and explain accessibility issues set outstanding testers apart. These capabilities ensure digital products are accessible, compliant, and inclusive for users of all abilities, minimizing legal risk and supporting organizational goals.
What challenges do Section 508 testers face in their daily work?
Section 508 Testers often encounter challenges such as identifying complex accessibility issues that require both technical know-how and user empathy, and communicating these findings effectively to designers or developers who may not be well-versed in accessibility standards. Balancing thorough testing across different platforms, browsers, and assistive technologies can also be demanding. However, teamwork is a key aspect, as testers frequently collaborate with development, UX, and content teams to ensure accessibility is integrated throughout the project lifecycle. Successfully overcoming these challenges helps contribute to creating more inclusive digital experiences.
