How much do secret security clearance jobs pay per year?

As of Aug 12, 2026, the average yearly pay for secret security clearance in the United States is $126,833.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $105,000.00 and $145,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is the typical process for obtaining and maintaining a secret security clearance?

Obtaining a Secret Security Clearance generally involves an extensive background investigation, verification of employment and education, credit and criminal history checks, and a detailed personal interview. Once granted, clearance holders must follow strict protocols for handling classified information and may undergo periodic reinvestigations or continuous evaluation to maintain eligibility. The process can take a few months and requires ongoing compliance with ethical standards and reporting requirements. It's important to keep personal and professional information up to date, as changes may affect your clearance status. Working in a role with this clearance also means you will regularly receive training and guidance to keep security knowledge current.

What is a secret security clearance?

A Secret Security Clearance job requires an individual to have a mid-level security clearance granted by the U.S. government. This clearance allows access to classified information that could cause serious damage to national security if disclosed without authorization. These jobs are typically in government agencies, defense contractors, or organizations that handle sensitive data. To obtain clearance, applicants must go through a background investigation and meet specific eligibility requirements.

Is it easier to get a job with a secret security clearance?

Having a secret security clearance can make it easier to qualify for certain government and defense jobs that require clearance, as it demonstrates trustworthiness and background vetting. However, obtaining a clearance involves a thorough background check, and not all positions automatically grant easier access; the clearance itself is a credential rather than a guarantee of employment.

Is it hard to get a secret security clearance?

Obtaining a secret security clearance can be challenging as it involves a thorough background check, including criminal, financial, and personal history reviews. Candidates must also undergo interviews and provide detailed information, and the process can take several months depending on the complexity of the background investigation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the secret security clearance position, and why are they important?

To thrive in a role requiring Secret Security Clearance, candidates must demonstrate integrity, trustworthiness, and a thorough background check history, often supported by previous experience in government or defense-related positions. Familiarity with classified information handling protocols, secure communication systems, and completion of government-sponsored clearance processes are typically required. Discretion, attention to detail, and strong interpersonal skills help individuals maintain compliance and effectively work with sensitive material. These qualities are vital for protecting national security interests and ensuring only authorized access to confidential information.
