Student - Gabis Seasonal Worker
City: Valparaiso
Job Description:
Overview
The Gabis Arboretum is building a team of enthusiastic, passionate individuals to work in a variety of roles at the arboretum. Possible duties include visitor services and cashiering, gardening, grounds maintenance, facility maintenance, running model trains in the Railway Garden, assisting with the set-up and break down of events, and general reception duties. The schedule is flexible and dependent upon business needs. Weekend and evening coverage may be required.
Position Duration: This position begins April 1, 2025 and ends on October 31, 2025
Duties and Responsibilities
  • Garden and Grounds: Weeding, watering, pruning, mulching, and planting. Mowing, trimming, and raking
  • Facilities Maintenance: Custodial duties such as cleaning restrooms, offices, and public spaces. Performing minor facility maintenance. Set-up and break-down for events, public classes, and meetings.
  • Event Support: Assist with concerts and facility rentals such as weddings and birthday parties
  • Cashiering and Visitor Services: Works in the gatehouse and Depot to accept payment for admission fees, annual memberships, classes, events and other programs. Provides brochures and maps to guests while conducting receptionist duties and answering phones
  • Model Train Operation: Operates G-gauge model trains in the Railway Garden. Assists with maintaining the tracks, vignettes, and plants

Experience
Depending on specific area(s) of interest, the most successful candidates will have a combination of experience:
  • Previous experience as a cashier and/or in a visitor services role
  • Previous experience maintaining a garden and general knowledge of native flora and fauna
  • Ability to operate small grounds equipment such as mowers and trimmers
  • Ability to work independently, self-motivated
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions
