Description
Under general supervision, locates and reads water meters on assigned route and accurately records data. Work also includes semi-skilled and skilled shop and field work in the repair and testing of water meters. An employee in this class is responsible for the cleaning, repairing and testing of meters. Work includes repairing residential and some commercial meters, refinishing dial faces, and placement and retrieval of meters. Duties include contact with the public in relation to the municipal water delivery system. Supervision is received from a skilled supervisor who communicates assignments orally and in writing.
Examples of Duties

  • Locates and reads water meters for the City; travels assigned route; records readings in books; and/or electronic reading devices; re-reads meter as needed for low or high usage.
  • Responsible for completing work orders which includes performing water turn ons and offs; closing accounts; verifying readings; checking for leaks; checking for dead meters or vacancies; cleaning dirty dials; and removing water, dirt, or debris from meter box.
  • Disassembles and repairs meters? replaces worn and defective parts? reassembles and adjusts meters to close specifications? replaces broken meter boxes.
  • Tests meters to determine accuracy of flow rate metering.
  • Engages in field repairs on water meters? cleans and replaces dials, washers and bonnets? salvages usable parts of meters.
  • Programs, records and repairs meter appurtenances related to an automated meter reading (AMR) billing system.
  • Responds to property-owner's questions.
  • Locates causes of low water pressure and leaks? locates causes of contaminated water in emergency situations.
  • Repairs water leaks.
  • Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, plus one (1) year experience in water distribution system maintenance or water meter repair and/or installation. Backflow Repair Technician Certification must be obtained by the end of the probationary period. Class 3 FDEP Water Distribution Operator's License must be obtained by the end of the probationary period
  • Must possess a valid Florida driver's license with satisfactory driving record held throughout employment.

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with fellow employees and the public.
  • Knowledge of low voltage electrical principles.
  • Ability to collect and record numerical data at a very high degree of accuracy. Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with work colleagues, supervisors, managers, and the public.
  • Must have the following physical abilities to be able to perform the essential functions of the position: work, light work, medium work, heavy work, balance, crawl, crouch, feel, finger objects, grasp, handle, hear, kneel, lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds, make rational decisions, pull, push, reach, use repetitive motion, speak, stand, stoop, talk, visualize and walk.
