Job description

Meter Installer
The successful candidate should be self-motivated, have a strong work ethic, and be able to work well with minimal supervision in various environments, including inclement weather.
Meter Installers are responsible for checking, replacing, and testing meters (water, electric, or gas). Training is provided.

UMS has designed a Pay-for-Performance structure to reward our strong performers.
No matter the project/location, you will make a minimum of $15 per hour. You will also be able to earn a Production-Based Incentive on each paycheck. The Production-Based Incentive is linked to performance (i.e., the number of meters and ancillary items you properly install).

THE POSITION
Successful Technicians are dependable, have a great work ethic & possess a mechanical aptitude.
As a part of our AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) Meter Installation Team, you are expected to:
  • Remove existing meters, fit for a new smart meter, and sometimes replace a dual check valve and/or curb stop valve.
  • Install, replace, and remove meters and flush lines.
  • Install and activate transmitters using project-specific tools within specifications.
  • Replace meter box lids to meet AMI (Advanced Metering Infrastructure) requirements.
  • Verify the proper orientation of each new meter and conduct tests to ensure the new meter is working.
  • Communicate with customers clearly and professionally.
  • Visit customer premises; lay and/or replace sod in yards where repair work has been completed, and ensure all property is restored. Make necessary repairs.
  • Ensure the meter is attached to the proper address/account.
  • Input data/findings into the tablet; troubleshoot the device as needed.
  • Maintain records of work performed, such as jobs completed, labor, materials, and equipment.
  • Load and unload equipment, supplies, tools, and materials.
  • Assist with and use various other types of equipment or supplies, including but not limited to vacuum trucks, valve trucks, forklifts, portable pumps, and more.
  • Report to the shop/Conex at the beginning of every shift.
  • Follow UMS safety procedures and utilize safety equipment (provided by the company)
  • Follow UMS standards of meter replacement productivity and quality of work.

  • Qualifications:
  • Must have and maintain a valid Driver's License
  • Must have and maintain proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Must pass drug screening and background check.
  • Must have reliable transportation.
  • Must have mechanical aptitude.
  • Must be okay with heat, dirt, small spaces, etc.
  • Must lift to 25 lbs., bend and stoop repetitively, kneel, and work outdoors in all weather conditions and environments.
  • Basic tools required.
  • Able to work in a team environment.
  • Have clear written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to work all required shifts.
  • Achieving standards of safety, productivity, and quality of work.

Previous water meter installation, utility, construction, pipefitting, or field service experience is preferred but not required.
