What is a seasonal software engineer?

A Seasonal Software Engineer is a temporary role where an engineer is hired for a specific period, often to support peak workloads, special projects, or short-term initiatives. These roles are common in industries with fluctuating demands, such as e-commerce during the holiday season or tax software companies before tax deadlines. Seasonal engineers perform tasks similar to full-time engineers, including coding, debugging, and collaborating with teams. The position may be part-time or full-time and can sometimes lead to permanent employment based on performance and company needs.

What are the typical responsibilities of a seasonal software engineer during their contract period?

Seasonal Software Engineers are usually brought on to help meet peak project demands, contribute to new feature development, fix bugs, or support major product launches. Their day-to-day duties often include writing and testing code, collaborating with full-time engineers and product managers, and participating in agile sprints or code reviews. They may also assist with troubleshooting, documentation, and integrating user feedback into software improvements. The workload can be varied and fast-paced, requiring quick ramp-up and frequent teamwork to meet key project deadlines.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the seasonal software engineer position, and why are they important?

A Seasonal Software Engineer should have solid programming skills, a relevant technical degree or equivalent experience, and familiarity with software development lifecycles. Experience with languages like Python, Java, or JavaScript, as well as familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git) and agile tools, is typically required. Strong communication, adaptability, and the ability to quickly learn new systems are important soft skills for seamless integration into temporary teams. These qualities ensure the engineer can rapidly contribute to projects, meet tight deadlines, and collaborate effectively in a fast-paced, time-limited environment.

Job description

Amazon Robotics is seeking a talented and motivated Software Development Engineer to join our Software Automation and Technology/Tooling (SWAT) team. We are a software team embedded in the Software org of the SEE (Systems Engineering and Evaluation) organization, building the automation frameworks, control systems, and infrastructure that enable scalable, reliable testing of next-generation robotic systems.
As an SDE on this team, you will design and implement software that directly interfaces with hardware - writing control logic for test fixtures, coordinating multi-device test sequences, collecting and processing sensor data, and building the tooling that hardware engineers rely on daily. You will work hands-on with physical systems, bridging the gap between software and hardware to automate testing workflows at the component, subsystem, and full system level.
We're looking for someone with strong software development expertise who is energized by working close to hardware

Success in this role requires comfort with reading datasheets, comprehension of communication protocols (serial, CAN, EtherCAT, etc.), and writing software that controls and coordinates physical devices. Solid software fundamentals - clean architecture, testable code, and pragmatic design choices - are essential, as is passion for applying them in an environment where code moves motors, reads sensors, and validates real-world robotic systems.
Key job responsibilities
In this role, you will:
- Design and implement control and coordination software for hardware test fixtures and workcells
- Develop automation scripts and frameworks that interface directly with robotic hardware (sensors, actuators, motor controllers, PLCs)
- Build reliable data collection pipelines for test measurements and hardware telemetry
- Contribute to our Automation Platform (AP) - extending and improving joint tooling used across multiple product programs
- Partner closely with Hardware Test Engineers and Hardware Development Engineers to comprehend test requirements and translate them into automated solutions
- Participate in the full development lifecycle - design, implementation, testing, deployment, and operational facilitation of test infrastructure
A day in the life
On a typical day, you will work with hardware engineers and stakeholders to grasp test requirements, design control and coordination software, and drive execution on automation initiatives. You will:
- Develop and maintain software that directly controls test fixtures and uut hardware - writing sequences that coordinate sensors, actuators, and measurement devices to validate robotic systems.
- Partner with Hardware Test Engineers to translate test procedures into reliable, repeatable automation - working hands-on with physical hardware to debug, calibrate, and refine solutions.
- Contribute to the evolution of our joint Automation Platform (AP), improving tooling and libraries that the broader test engineering organization relys on

This work will have measurable impact on test coverage, throughput, and reliability.
Amazon offers a full range of benefits for you and eligible family members, including domestic partners. Benefits can vary by location, the number of regularly scheduled hours you work, length of employment, and job status such as seasonal or temporary employment. The benefits that generally apply to regular, full-time employees include:
1

Medical, Dental, and Vision Coverage
2. Maternity and Parental Leave Options
3. Paid Time Off (PTO)
4.

401(k) Plan
If you are not sure that every qualification on the list above describes you exactly, we'd still love to hear from you. At Amazon, we value people with unique backgrounds, experiences, and skillsets. If you're passionate about this role and want to make an impact on a global scale, please apply!
About the team
The SWAT team at Amazon Robotics builds the software infrastructure that powers automated hardware testing.

We develop frameworks, tools, and services that enable rapid, reliable verification of robotic systems - aiding everything from early prototype testing through production validation. Our software helps seed quality and reliability across AR's robotics portfolio.
We work with the latest robotic solutions starting at the early prototype phase, and our team owns the end-to-end software stack that makes automated testing possible at scale.
