Job description

The Racing Division of the Massachusetts Gaming Commission is seeking to hire a Veterinarian.ย ย Reporting to the Chief Commission Veterinarian, this position provides seasonal veterinary services at licensed racetrack facilities within the Commonwealth, as well as records management and related duties as assigned. The anticipated dates of service are April through November.

Job responsibilities include, but are not limited to:ย 

  • Provideย relevant Commission veterinary-related services at the Commonwealthโ€™s licensed racetrack facilitiesย (Plainridgeย Park).ย Specifically, this positionย requires drawing blood and ensuring the chain of custody for post-race testing of racehorses.ย 

  • Responsible for the overall operations of the Commission test barnย

Knowledge/skills required:ย 

  • Current licensure with Massachusetts Board of Registration in Veterinary Medicine or willingness and ability to become licensed prior to March 2017ย 

  • Previous experience working with horsesย 

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time and work in outdoor conditionsย 

  • Based on assignment, travel may be required. Those employees who elect to use a motor vehicle for travel must have a current and valid Massachusetts Class D Motor Vehicle Operator's license or the equivalent from another state.ย 

Knowledge/skills preferred:ย 

  • Previous experience in the MGC racing division or in the racetrack industry is preferredย 

  • Previous similar experience in a local, state, or federal government agency settingย 

Salary is hourly and commensurate with experience.ย 

The successful candidate must pass an extensive background check conducted by the Massachusetts State Police.ย  It includes a full credit check, CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information), fingerprinting, drug test, reference checks, review of IRS Income Tax Transcripts for the last four years, and a Certificate of Good Standing from the Massachusetts Dept. of Revenue (DOR).

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission is responsible for the implementation of the expanded gaming law (Chapter 194 of the Acts of 2011) and regulatory oversight of G.L. chapter 23K (casino gaming), chapter 23N (sports wagering), and chapter 128A (horse racing). Under these laws, the Commission is tasked with establishing a regulatory framework for the solicitation, licensing, taxation, and oversight of a maximum of three casino licenses and one slots parlor only license, the provision of in-person and digital sports wagering, and the live and simulcasting of horse racing in Massachusetts.
