THE POSITION

As a Temporary State Veterinarian for the Department of Agriculture, you will help protect the wellbeing of racehorses while ensuring fair competition. This position gives you hands on experience with inspections, testing, and emergency care at Meadows Racetrack. You will work closely with racing staff and judges in a role that makes a visible impact every day. Join a team where your expertise supports both safety and the sport of racing.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

This position focuses on supervising testing procedures, evaluating horses, and supporting the daily racing program at Meadows Racetrack. It also involves providing medical oversight, documentation, and communication with racing officials. As a Temporary State Veterinarian, you will perform the following duties:

  • Test Barn Oversight: Supervise sample collection, blood gas testing, and related records for pre and post race procedures
  • Medication Monitoring: Oversee eligibility and record keeping for horses approved for respiratory bleeder treatments
  • Pre Race Checks: Conduct paddock inspections on horses before they compete
  • Medical Evaluation: Examine horses and notify judges if an animal is unfit for racing
  • Emergency Response: Provide urgent treatment when a private veterinarian is not available
  • Program Participation: Attend required meetings and document necropsy information according to policy

Work Schedule and Additional Information:

  • Part-time, per diem employment
  • Work hours are 9:30 AM to 5:30 PM, Tuesday - Saturday.
  • Work schedule is vendor controlled and is determined by the racing schedule.

REQUIRED EXPERIENCE, TRAINING & ELIGIBILITY

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Experience and Training Requirements:

  • Graduation from a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine or Veterinary Medical Doctor program.

Special Requirement:
  • This position requires possession of a valid license to practice veterinary medicine as issued by a State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners.

Post Employment Requirement:
  • Possession of a Commission Employee License
